Chapter 12 - the grave with no body)

Victor sent coordinates thirty seconds later.
A cemetery in rural Massachusetts.
Rachel wanted to leave immediately.
Quinn refused until the site was secured.
The grave belonged to Anna Mercer.
Date of death: twelve years earlier.
No one in Daniel's family knew it existed.
Rachel stood beneath a cold gray sky staring at her sister's name carved into stone.
"I don't remember this."
Daniel held her hand.
Quinn had obtained a court order to open the grave.
The cemetery crew worked carefully.
The coffin emerged.
Rachel turned away when it was opened.
Quinn approached minutes later.
Her expression said everything.
"No body."
Rachel looked at her.
"What?"
"The coffin is empty."
Vanessa exhaled.
"Victor lied."
Quinn shook her head.
"Or somebody staged a burial."
Rachel stepped closer.
Inside the coffin was a metal case.
No remains.
No clothing.
Only the case.
Police opened it under controlled conditions.
Inside were paper files and an old voice recorder.
The first document was a death certificate for Anna Mercer.
Cause of death: complications following neurological injury.
Signed by a physician.
Dr. Eleanor Voss.
Quinn went still.
Daniel noticed.
"What?"
"The name."
"What about it?"
Quinn opened the archive search on her tablet.
Director E.
Eleanor Voss.
Could E stand for Eleanor?
Vanessa whispered, "She ran Graybridge clinical operations."
"You knew her?"
"No. Only the name."
The voice recorder contained one file.
Rachel pressed play.
Anna's voice.
Rachel began crying before the second sentence.
"If you are hearing this, my death certificate has been found."
Rachel gripped Daniel's hand.
"I am not dead."
Rachel laughed through tears.
Anna continued.
"The grave was created to end one identity."
Daniel looked at Rachel.
"Victor knew it was empty."
"Of course he did."
Anna's recording continued.
"Victor believes I know Director E's location. I do not."
Pause.
"But Rachel may."
Rachel closed her eyes.
"Before Graybridge altered my sister's memories, Rachel discovered something I didn't."
The sound distorted briefly.
"A personal connection between Eleanor Voss and the Hale family."
Daniel froze.
Rachel looked at him.
Anna continued.
"Michael never learned what it was."
The recording ended abruptly.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
"A connection to my family?"
Quinn began searching records.
Eleanor Voss had almost no public history.
Medical school overseas.
Several private clinics.
No spouse.
No children listed.
No photographs after 2008.
Then a facial recognition search produced an old university image.
Daniel saw it.
Stopped.
The woman was younger.
Dark hair.
But the eyes.
He knew those eyes.
His mother had them.
Rachel saw the resemblance.
"No."
Daniel whispered.
"Eleanor Voss is related to my mother."
Quinn dug deeper.
Birth records were sealed, but an archived newspaper announcement gave a clue.
Eleanor Hale had graduated from medical school thirty-five years earlier.
Hale.
Daniel's family name.
Quinn looked at him.
"Your mother had a sister?"
Daniel could barely answer.
"She told us her sister died when they were children."
Rachel's expression hardened.
"Another death that wasn't real."
Daniel called Evelyn's phone.
Victor answered.
"You finally found Eleanor."
"She's my aunt."
Victor said nothing.
"Director E is Evelyn's sister."
Still silence.
Daniel understood.
"You didn't know I would figure it out."
Victor's voice changed slightly.
"Michael always said you were better than you thought."
"Where is Evelyn?"
"You are focused on the wrong sister."
"Where is Anna?"
"Closer than you think."
"Stop playing games."
Victor sighed.
"Very well."
A video call opened.
Evelyn appeared in a plain room.
Unharmed.
Then someone walked behind her.
A woman.
Dark hair streaked with gray.
Late forties.
Rachel screamed.
"Anna."
The woman looked into the camera.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Rachel."
Rachel reached toward the screen as if she could touch her.
Daniel stared.
Anna was alive.
Not missing.
Not dead.
With Victor.
Then something even stranger happened.
Victor stepped into frame.
Anna did not recoil.
She did not appear restrained.
She stood beside him voluntarily.
Daniel's blood chilled.
Rachel saw it too.
"Anna?"
Her sister looked devastated.
"I'm sorry."
The screen went black.
Rachel whispered, "She's working with him."
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
"You saw her."
"That doesn't mean she's with Victor."
"She was standing beside him."
Daniel remembered Michael's warnings.
Nothing around Graybridge was ever simple.
Quinn's phone rang.
A technician from the archive team.
Another section had decrypted.
A file labeled FAMILY LINEAGE.
Inside were medical histories.
The Hale family.
The Mercer family.
Eleanor Voss.
Evelyn Hale.
Michael.
Daniel.
Anna.
Rachel.
And Lily.
Daniel stared at his daughter's name.
"No."
Quinn opened the record.
Lily Hale had been assigned a Graybridge subject code before she was born.
Rachel began shaking.
"They planned for her?"
The file contained a notation.
SECOND GENERATION RESPONSE POTENTIAL UNKNOWN.
Daniel's fear became rage.
Victor had never been interested only in the archive.
He had been watching Lily because she was the child of two people exposed to Graybridge compounds.
Daniel turned to Quinn.
"We get my daughter out of here."
Rachel was already moving.
They returned to the protected hotel.
The officer outside Lily's room lay unconscious on the floor.
The door stood open.
Daniel ran inside.
Empty.
"Lily!"
Mrs. Bell was gone too.
A child's white shoe lay beside the bed.
Rachel screamed.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
One message waited.
