Chapter 6 - the white horse)

Daniel had forgotten the sculpture existed.
A carved white horse.
Small enough to hold in two hands.
Michael had given it to Daniel on his thirtieth birthday, three weeks before the fire.
After Michael died, Daniel could barely look at anything connected to him.
He had boxed up several gifts.
His mother had taken the horse.
Evelyn kept it in the glass cabinet of her library.
Daniel had seen it dozens of times without thinking about it.
Now Victor Caine was asking about it.
Police reached Evelyn's house first.
The front door was unlocked.
No sign of forced entry.
No Victor.
No Evelyn.
Only the white horse sat on the library table.
Detective Quinn arrived with Daniel twenty minutes later.
A note rested beneath it.
YOU WERE ALWAYS SLOWER THAN MICHAEL.
Daniel touched the sculpture.
Quinn stopped him.
"Gloves."
A technician photographed it.
The horse appeared ordinary.
Smooth white lacquer.
Wooden base.
Small brass plate with Daniel's initials.
Quinn asked, "Why would Michael hide something here?"
"I don't know if he did."
"Victor believes he did."
Daniel stared at the brass plate.
Michael had engraved a strange message beneath Daniel's initials.
D.H.
KEEP RUNNING FORWARD.
Daniel had always assumed it was a joke about Daniel's habit of abandoning hobbies.
Now the phrase felt deliberate.
A forensic technician examined the sculpture with a scanner.
"There may be a hollow compartment in the base."
Daniel's heart accelerated.
The brass plate was removed.
Behind it was a narrow opening.
Inside rested a tiny metal cylinder.
Quinn looked at Daniel.
"Do you recognize this?"
"No."
The technician opened it.
A microdrive slid into his gloved hand.
Daniel exhaled.
Michael had hidden something.
Victor was right.
Quinn did not allow Daniel to access the drive immediately.
It was taken to a secure lab.
Daniel cared more about his mother.
"Where is Evelyn?"
Quinn answered carefully.
"We're searching."
"Victor has her."
"We don't know that."
"You saw the video."
"I saw a video in which someone placed a folder in front of her."
"He was inside her house."
"Yes."
"He took her."
"Possibly."
Daniel glared at her.
"Detective."
Quinn stepped closer.
"Daniel, if Victor wanted your mother dead, why show you she was alive?"
Daniel said nothing.
"Because he wants the drive."
"So we give it to him."
"No."
"He has my mother."
"And if the drive contains evidence of multiple murders, illegal medical experimentation, or a criminal network, handing it over may put many more people in danger."
Daniel wanted to hit something.
Instead he walked toward the window.
Michael had died because of these files.
Rachel had nearly died.
Lily had been threatened.
Now Evelyn was missing.
"Everything Graybridge touches destroys my family."
Quinn's voice softened.
"Then we stop it."
At the hospital, Rachel was discharged the following afternoon under police protection.
Doctors confirmed she had suffered repeated exposure to a sedative compound over at least ten days.
The final dose had been dangerous.
Vanessa's so-called neutralizer may have reduced the severity.
Rachel struggled with the irony.
The woman Lily accused might have helped save her.
But too many questions remained.
Why had Vanessa known Rachel was being drugged?
Who gave her the neutralizer?
Why was an unlabeled medicine bottle in her purse?
And why had Vanessa been secretly communicating with someone connected to Graybridge?
Vanessa was eventually released from custody but remained under investigation.
She asked to see Rachel.
Daniel refused.
Rachel disagreed.
"I want to hear her."
"She lied to us."
"So did everyone."
"Rachel."
"If Vanessa wanted me dead, she had years to do it."
Daniel looked toward Lily playing under an officer's supervision in the hospital family room.
"She put something in your milk."
"And if she hadn't, I might have died."
Daniel hated hearing it.
Rachel continued.
"I need to know who warned her."
Against his instincts, Daniel agreed.
The meeting took place in a private hospital conference room with Quinn present.
Vanessa entered wearing plain clothes.
No red dress.
No heels.
No elegance.
She looked exhausted.
Rachel stared at her.
Vanessa began crying almost immediately.
"I'm sorry."
Rachel's expression remained cold.
"For which part?"
"All of it."
"You knew someone was poisoning me."
"Not until two days ago."
"You knew Graybridge existed."
"Yes."
"You knew Michael was connected."
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"Yes."
Daniel stepped forward.
"And you said nothing."
Vanessa looked at him.
"Because I watched what happened to people who did."
"Who warned you about Rachel's milk?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Quinn said, "This is your chance."
Vanessa reached into her coat.
Daniel tensed.
Quinn's hand moved toward her sidearm.
Vanessa slowly removed a folded photograph.
She placed it on the table.
The image showed a man in his late forties standing outside an office building.
Daniel did not recognize him.
Rachel did.
Her face changed.
"I've seen him."
"Where?" Quinn asked.
"In the hallway."
Daniel turned.
"When?"
"Last month. I thought he was with the security company."
Vanessa whispered, "His name is Adrian Vale."
Quinn wrote it down.
"He gave you the neutralizer?"
"Yes."
"Who is he?"
"I thought he was Graybridge."
"And now?"
Vanessa looked at Rachel.
"He said he was trying to destroy it from inside."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"And you believed him?"
"He knew things no outsider could know."
"Such as?"
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
"The white horse."
Nobody spoke.
Daniel's face went cold.
"How did he know about that?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know."
Quinn leaned forward.
"Did Adrian tell you Victor wanted the drive?"
Vanessa blinked.
"What drive?"
The answer appeared genuine.
Daniel and Quinn exchanged a glance.
Vanessa noticed.
"What drive?"
Rachel asked Daniel quietly, "Did you find something?"
He told her.
Michael had hidden a microdrive in the horse.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
"Then Victor won't stop."
Quinn asked, "What's on it?"
"If Michael created the archive he talked about, everything."
"Everything what?"
"Names. Payments. trial records. internal communications."
Rachel whispered, "Enough to expose Graybridge."
Vanessa nodded.
"And enough to implicate people who have spent years making sure they cannot be exposed."
Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Victor's voice was calm.
"You opened the horse."
Daniel stood.
"Where is my mother?"
"Safe."
"Put her on."
"You have something that belongs to me."
"It belonged to Michael."
"Your brother stole it."
"My brother died because of it."
Victor sighed.
"Michael died because he believed morality could defeat infrastructure."
Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.
"If you touch my mother."
"I have no interest in harming Evelyn."
"Then release her."
"Bring me the drive."
Quinn motioned for Daniel to keep him talking.
Daniel asked, "Where?"
"You'll receive instructions."
"Let me hear her."
A pause.
Then Evelyn's voice.
"Daniel?"
"Mom."
"I'm all right."
"Where are you?"
"I don't know."
Victor returned.
"Midnight tomorrow."
The line ended.
Daniel looked at Quinn.
"I'm going."
"No."
"Don't start."
"It's an obvious trap."
"I don't care."
Rachel stood despite still looking weak.
"I do."
Daniel turned.
"Rachel."
"We almost lost you once because of Graybridge. Lily almost lost me. We're not walking into another trap with no plan."
Daniel looked at his family.
Then at Vanessa.
"Tell us everything you know about Victor."
Vanessa hesitated.
"There is one thing."
"What?"
"Victor never goes anywhere alone."
Quinn asked, "Security?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"Witnesses."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
May you like
Vanessa looked toward the mirrored conference room window.
"It means if Victor asked you to meet him, someone close to you is probably already working for him."
