Chapter 7 - the lie inside the marriage)

Claire slept for almost fourteen hours.
Doctors said that was not unusual.
Stress had overwhelmed her.
Her medical records showed long-term neurological treatment, sedatives, memory therapy, and periods of severe confusion.
But they also showed improvement.
That was what disturbed Ruiz.
Six months earlier, Claire had begun consistently identifying herself by her real first name.
Four months earlier, she had drawn the floor plan of her home.
Three months earlier, she had written David's name seventeen times on a sheet of paper.
Two months earlier, she told a therapist she had a daughter named Lily.
None of those developments had been reported to law enforcement.
Instead, Laura authorized increased medication.
The doctor responsible was Simon Reed.
Ruiz issued a warrant for his arrest.
Reed remained missing.
Mark Vale remained missing too.
Laura remained in custody.
Her attorney now claimed the entire situation was a misunderstanding.
According to the defense, Laura believed Claire had suffered such profound psychological damage that reintroducing her family would have endangered everyone.
Ruiz read the statement aloud in disbelief.
David nearly threw the paper across the room.
"She told us Claire was dead."
"I know."
"She married me."
"I know."
"She tied Lily up because Lily found a key."
"Which is why her explanation has problems."
Problems.
David almost laughed.
Lily was allowed to see Claire again that afternoon.
The reunion remained quiet.
Claire remembered fragments.
Lily's favorite breakfast.
The name of her stuffed rabbit.
A song she used to hum while brushing her hair.
Other things were gone.
Claire could not remember Lily starting second grade.
She thought David's father was still alive.
He had died three years earlier.
She believed the current president was someone from a previous administration.
Time inside her mind had fractured.
David watched her search for memories and hated Laura more with each lost piece.
Yet Claire remembered Room 17.
When Ruiz asked about it, her hands began shaking.
"Not today," the doctor said.
Claire insisted.
"I need to."
Ruiz recorded the interview.
David sat across from Claire.
Lily waited elsewhere with Rachel.
Claire stared at the table.
"I was investigating money."
"What money?" Ruiz asked.
"My father's trust."
Claire's father had built a regional chain of medical supply companies.
When he died, he left substantial assets to Claire and Laura.
Claire managed most of the family accounts.
Laura resented that.
"At first I thought it was bookkeeping errors," Claire said. "Small transfers. Then larger ones."
"To whom?"
"Companies that didn't exist."
"Controlled by Laura?"
Claire nodded.
"And Mark."
"Mark Vale?"
"Yes."
David closed his eyes.
Mark had been their attorney for eight years.
Claire continued.
"I confronted Laura."
"When?"
"A week before the crash."
"What did she say?"
"That I was humiliating her. That Dad had always trusted me more. She said the money belonged to both of us anyway."
"What happened after that?"
"I told her I was going to the police."
Claire's breathing changed.
David reached for her hand.
She pulled away automatically.
Then looked at him, ashamed.
"Sorry."
"You don't have to apologize."
Claire stared at his wedding ring.
David had taken Laura's ring off the night before.
The pale mark remained.
Claire noticed.
"You married her."
It was not a question.
David swallowed.
"I thought you were dead."
"I know."
"Claire..."
"I know."
Her voice was gentle.
That made it worse.
Ruiz redirected.
"What do you remember about the crash?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"Rain."
"Anything else?"
"My brakes didn't feel right."
David looked at Ruiz.
Claire continued.
"I called Mark."
"Why Mark?"
"He was nearby. He told me to pull over at Merritt House."
"Why there?"
"He said the main road was flooding."
"What happened?"
"I don't know."
She rubbed her temple.
"I remember turning off the highway."
"And then?"
"Headlights behind me."
Her voice became smaller.
"A loud sound."
"Do you remember leaving the road?"
"No."
"Do you remember being injured?"
"Pieces."
Claire breathed slowly.
"I woke up in Room 17."
David felt cold.
"At Merritt House?"
"Yes."
"Who was there?"
Claire's eyes opened.
"Laura."
Ruiz leaned forward.
"What did she say?"
Claire stared past them.
"She told me David and Lily thought I was dead."
David's hands clenched.
"How long were you there?"
"I don't know."
"Did you try to leave?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
"Mark stopped me."
Ruiz asked, "Physically?"
Claire nodded.
No details were necessary.
The silence contained enough.
"Then Dr. Reed came."
"What did he tell you?"
"That I had a brain injury. That I was confused."
"Were you?"
"Yes."
Claire looked at David.
"I knew your face, but sometimes I couldn't remember your last name. I knew I had a daughter, but I couldn't remember whether she was six or seven. They used that."
David stared at the table.
Claire continued.
"Laura said you had signed papers saying you didn't want me near Lily."
"I never did."
"I know that now."
Her voice broke.
"But back then I didn't."
Ruiz asked about Havenridge North.
Claire remembered being transferred.
She remembered Laura visiting.
She remembered asking for David.
Sometimes Laura told her David had moved away.
Sometimes she said David blamed Claire for the accident.
Sometimes she said Lily had forgotten her.
Claire cried when she said that.
David could not stay seated.
He stood, walked to the wall, and pressed both palms against it.
Eighteen months.
Laura had not simply hidden Claire.
She had constructed another reality around her.
"Why did Laura bring Lily to Room 17 last month?" Ruiz asked.
Claire froze.
"She brought Lily?"
"Yes."
Claire's face drained of color.
"Why?"
"We hoped you might know."
Claire stared at David.
Then she whispered, "The backup."
"What backup?"
"My evidence."
Ruiz leaned forward.
"I stored copies before the crash."
"Where?"
Claire looked toward the door.
"Room 17."
"We searched it."
"Not the room."
Claire shook her head.
"The wall."
David remembered the scratching.
The missing drawer.
The hidden security room.
Claire continued.
"Behind the old bathroom mirror. There's a compartment."
Ruiz immediately called the officers still processing Merritt House.
They found it twenty minutes later.
The compartment was empty.
But there was something written inside.
A single sentence in Claire's handwriting.
IF THIS IS EMPTY, ASK LILY WHERE SHE HID THE RED BOOK.
David stared at the photograph Ruiz sent.
"Lily?"
Claire looked confused.
"I never told her about a red book."
Ruiz's phone rang.
It was Rachel.
She spoke for less than thirty seconds.
May you like
Then she looked at David.
"Lily is gone."
