Police traced Mark's call to a disposable phone that had already been discarded.
The sentence he left behind became the center of the investigation.
Claire wasn't the person Laura needed dead.
David assumed he meant Lily.
Ruiz was not convinced.
"If Laura wanted Lily dead, she had opportunities," she said. "Her behavior was abusive and dangerous, but the evidence so far suggests she wanted Lily silent."
"Then who?"
"Maybe you."
David stared at her.
"Why?"
Ruiz pointed toward Claire's insurance paperwork.
"If you were gone too, Laura might gain practical control of Lily's trust."
David felt sick.
But Evelyn disagreed.
"Laura doesn't think that far emotionally."
Ruiz looked at her.
"You know her?"
"I knew both sisters for years."
"What does Laura want?"
Evelyn considered.
"To win."
"Money?"
"Money is proof."
"Proof of what?"
"That she mattered more."
David remembered Claire's letter.
Laura has spent her entire life becoming whatever the room required.
Evelyn continued.
"Claire was older. More trusted. Their father put her in charge of the business. Their mother left Claire the family jewelry. Laura believed every decision was a judgment against her."
"So hiding Claire gave her what?" David asked.
"Claire's money. Claire's house."
Evelyn looked directly at him.
"Claire's husband."
The room went silent.
David felt disgust rise in his throat.
"She married me because she wanted to replace Claire?"
"I don't know. But I think she wanted Claire to know she had."
Ruiz returned to Mark's sentence.
"Then Claire may have been the audience, not the target."
David understood.
Laura had kept Claire alive.
Not out of mercy.
To make her suffer.
Havenridge records supported the theory.
Laura's visits increased after she married David.
On one occasion, she brought photographs.
Claire remembered that visit.
The doctors allowed Ruiz to interview her again.
David sat nearby.
"She showed me the wedding," Claire whispered.
David closed his eyes.
Laura had taken their wedding album to Havenridge.
"She told me Lily called her Mom."
Lily had never done that.
"She said David chose her."
Claire looked at him.
"I believed her."
"I'm sorry."
"You didn't know."
"I should have."
Claire shook her head.
"You cannot keep apologizing for decisions made inside a lie."
David looked at her.
For the first time, he saw not only the wife he had lost.
He saw the woman who had survived without him.
Different.
Wounded.
Stronger in unfamiliar places.
Ruiz asked about Box 417.
Claire remembered hiding the key inside her wedding dress.
She also remembered what was in the box.
"Original documents."
"About the money?"
"Yes. And recordings."
"Of Laura?"
"And Mark."
"Anything else?"
Claire looked toward David.
"A video."
"What video?"
"The night Laura came to my office."
Claire had installed a hidden security camera after discovering someone searched her files.
The camera recorded Laura and Mark discussing the guardianship documents.
More importantly, Laura said a sentence Claire never forgot.
If the accident doesn't work, Reed can keep her confused long enough for the papers.
Ruiz sat back.
"Accident."
Claire nodded.
"They were planning something before the crash."
David's stomach turned.
"Was the crash planned?"
"I don't remember enough."
"But the recording might prove intent."
"Yes."
"And whoever has the second key can access it."
"Yes."
Ruiz asked, "Could Mark open the box without Evelyn's key?"
Claire shook her head.
"Not unless he forces her."
Everyone looked at Evelyn.
Ruiz immediately assigned protection.
Box 417 became a race.
Evelyn still possessed Key A.
Claire's Key B had been stolen from the wedding dress.
Mark likely had it.
But the bank required both keys plus identity verification.
Claire was legally dead.
That created a problem for Mark.
Unless he had forged identity documents.
Police notified the facility.
Box 417 was frozen by court order.
That should have ended the race.
Instead, someone broke into the safe-deposit facility that night.
No boxes were opened.
But an employee was found unconscious in a back office after being struck.
He survived.
Security footage showed a man wearing a maintenance uniform.
Mark.
He escaped before police arrived.
Why attempt a burglary after the court freeze?
Ruiz studied the footage.
"He's desperate."
David looked at the monitor.
"Because Laura is in jail."
"Or because he's afraid of what's in the box."
The next morning, Laura requested an interview.
No attorney present.
Ruiz refused until Laura's lawyer arrived.
Three hours later, they sat in an interview room.
Laura looked composed again.
David watched through glass.
Ruiz placed a photograph of Claire on the table.
Laura did not react.
"We found her."
"I heard."
"You knew she was alive."
"I knew someone resembling Claire was receiving care."
Ruiz almost smiled.
"Try again."
Laura folded her hands.
"You want Mark Vale."
"We do."
"I can give him to you."
"In exchange for?"
"Reduced charges."
"On what?"
Laura's eyes flicked toward the observation window.
She knew David was there.
"Everything."
Ruiz waited.
Laura leaned back.
"Mark caused the crash."
"Did you order him to?"
"No."
"Did you know he planned it?"
"No."
"Did you pay Dr. Reed?"
"For Claire's care."
"Under a false name?"
"To protect her."
"From whom?"
"Mark."
Ruiz's expression did not change.
Laura continued.
"I saved Claire."
David nearly walked into the room.
Ruiz had warned him not to.
He stayed.
Laura said Mark sabotaged Claire's vehicle to stop her from reporting the fraud.
According to Laura, she arrived after the crash and discovered Claire alive.
She panicked.
Mark convinced her police would blame them both.
So they moved Claire.
"I made terrible choices," Laura said. "But I kept my sister alive."
Ruiz asked, "Why declare her dead?"
"Mark forced me."
"Why marry David?"
For the first time, Laura hesitated.
"That had nothing to do with Claire."
Behind the glass, David laughed once.
Coldly.
Laura heard him.
She looked toward the mirror.
Ruiz placed Claire's medical records on the table.
"Why increase her medication every time her memory improved?"
Laura's face changed.
"I followed the doctor's advice."
"Why bring Lily to Merritt House?"
Silence.
"Why tie Lily to the fireplace?"
Silence.
"Why search for Claire's evidence?"
Silence.
Ruiz leaned closer.
"Where is Mark?"
Laura looked at the mirror again.
Then she said, "Ask David where he buried Claire."
David went completely still.
Ruiz frowned.
"Claire is alive."
