The music box was exactly where Lily said.
Locker 36.
Briarwood Elementary.
Rachel opened the school with the principal after hours.
Lily walked directly to the locker.
She had hidden the music box beneath a stack of art papers and an old sweatshirt.
"I didn't want Laura to throw it away."
David lifted it carefully.
The wooden carousel was chipped.
One painted horse had lost an ear.
Claire touched it with both hands.
"Your grandmother gave this to you the day you were born."
Lily smiled.
"I know."
Claire turned it over.
The felt base had been glued back imperfectly.
She peeled one edge.
A microSD card slid into her palm.
Ruiz sent it directly to digital forensics.
No one slept much that night.
By morning, they knew what Claire had preserved.
Emails.
Bank records.
Copies of the false guardianship drafts.
Photographs of payments to Simon Reed.
Audio recordings of Mark and Laura.
And the hidden office video Claire remembered.
The video was devastating.
Laura entered Claire's office three days before the crash.
Mark followed.
Claire's hidden camera recorded them searching her desk.
Mark found a folder.
Laura read it.
Her face changed.
"She knows."
Mark asked, "How much?"
"Everything."
"What do you want me to do?"
Laura paced.
"We need time."
"Reed can sign the capacity assessment."
"Not while she's walking around telling people we're stealing."
Mark lowered his voice.
"We can scare her."
Laura looked at him.
"How?"
"The mountain road."
Long silence.
Then Laura said, "No body."
Mark stared.
"What?"
"If there's an accident, there can't be a body."
David stopped the video.
He could not continue.
Ruiz watched the rest.
Later she summarized.
Laura and Mark discussed making Claire's disappearance appear fatal.
Mark suggested damaging the car enough to cause a controlled crash near Merritt House, where they could intercept Claire afterward.
Their original plan was to stage a disappearance, use Reed to declare her mentally incompetent under a false identity, and eventually establish presumed death.
But the crash was worse than Mark intended.
Claire suffered real injuries.
Laura adapted.
The death story became permanent.
Claire remained alive because Laura wanted the account passwords, signatures, and eventually control over assets only Claire fully understood.
When Claire's memory returned, Laura increased medication through Reed.
When Lily began asking questions, Laura became desperate.
The evidence was enough to transform the case.
Laura faced conspiracy charges, fraud, kidnapping, abuse, obstruction, and charges related to the crash.
Reed accepted a cooperation agreement in exchange for testimony.
Mark still had not been captured.
But the microSD card made his laptop irrelevant.
He no longer possessed the only copy.
Ruiz released a carefully limited public statement.
Within six hours, Mark called.
Not police.
David.
"You're ruining everything."
David stepped into an empty interview room while Ruiz traced the call.
"No, Mark."
"You think Claire is innocent?"
"Of what?"
"Ask her why she never told you she was leaving."
David went still.
"What?"
Mark laughed.
"She was going to take Lily and disappear."
David looked through the glass.
Claire sat outside with Rachel.
"You're lying."
"Check the files."
"What files?"
"The storage unit. She had passports."
The call ended.
Police had recovered partially burned paperwork from the warehouse.
Among them were travel documents.
Claire admitted the truth when David asked.
"I was going to leave for a few days."
"With Lily?"
"Yes."
"Without telling me?"
"I planned to tell you after we were safe."
"Safe from Laura?"
"Yes."
David stared at her.
"Why didn't you trust me?"
Claire's answer was quiet.
"Because Laura had already convinced you I was overreacting."
David remembered.
Claire had complained about Laura borrowing money.
He told her to stop fighting with her sister.
Claire worried Mark was too involved in family finances.
David told her Mark had served them for years.
Claire once said she feared Laura wanted her life.
David laughed.
Not cruelly.
But he laughed.
"I didn't believe you."
"No."
"Just like I didn't believe Lily."
Claire looked down.
David sat.
For a moment, the mystery was no longer about Laura.
It was about the space inside a family where trust should have been.
Laura had entered through that space.
She had widened it.
Used it.
But she had not created all of it.
David had to own his part.
"I can't undo it."
"No."
"But I can stop pretending I did nothing wrong because I didn't know everything."
Claire looked at him.
"That would be a start."
The honesty hurt.
It also felt like the first clean thing between them in eighteen months.
Ruiz entered.
"We have Mark."
David stood.
"Where?"
"A bus terminal outside Cedar Falls."
"How?"
"He tried to buy a ticket with cash. Someone recognized him from the news."
Mark was arrested without incident.
In his bag police found forged identification, Claire's stolen second key, and the laptop from Unit 417.
He refused to speak.
Then his attorney saw the recovered microSD evidence.
By evening, Mark wanted a deal.
He gave investigators the final piece.
The night of the crash, Mark tampered with Claire's vehicle.
He intended to force her to stop near Merritt House.
Instead, Claire lost control earlier than expected.
Mark reached the wreck first.
Claire was alive but injured.
Laura arrived twenty minutes later.
Mark wanted to call emergency services.
Laura stopped him.
She said Claire would expose them.
They transported Claire to Merritt House.
Reed treated her privately.
Then Laura placed Claire at Havenridge under a false identity.
Mark admitted that he had spent eighteen months expecting Laura to eventually let Claire return.
She never intended to.
"What changed?" Ruiz asked.
"Claire remembered Lily."
Mark looked down.
"Once she started remembering, Laura knew it was over."
"So she moved her again."
"Yes."
"Why bring Lily to Room 17?"
"Laura thought Claire had told Lily where the evidence was."
"Did Claire?"
"No."
Mark laughed without humor.
"The kid was smarter than all of us."
Ruiz asked one final question.
"What would Laura have done if David had not come home when he did?"
Mark's face changed.
"I don't know."
Ruiz waited.
Mark looked toward the camera.
"Actually..."
