Chapter 6 - the patient with no name)

Havenridge North did not appear on the company's public website.

That was the first thing Detective Ruiz disliked about it.

The second was the fence.

The facility sat behind twelve-foot black iron gates surrounded by dense woodland.

A small brass sign near the entrance identified it only as North Residential Annex.

No hospital symbol.

No public entrance.

No visitor parking.

Ruiz arrived with state police shortly before noon.

David stayed behind.

He hated every second of it.

He hated being told he could not rush through the gates.

He hated understanding why.

He hated the possibility that Claire was somewhere inside while he sat seventy miles away drinking police station coffee.

Lily stayed close.

She had slept less than two hours.

Rachel had offered to take her home.

Lily refused.

"I want to be here when they find Mom."

David did not correct her.

At twelve forty-eight, Ruiz called.

"We're inside."

David stood.

"And?"

"We found patient records."

"And Claire?"

"Give me a minute."

The call ended.

Twenty-one minutes passed.

David counted each one.

At one seventeen, his phone rang again.

Ruiz's voice had changed.

"David."

"Is she there?"

A pause.

"We found A.B."

David closed his eyes.

"Is she Claire?"

"We're bringing in an independent physician."

"Elena."

It was the first time he had used the detective's first name.

"Tell me."

Ruiz exhaled.

"I think it's her."

David sat down.

Lily stared at him.

He covered the phone.

"They found someone."

"Mom?"

"Maybe."

Lily began shaking.

David returned to the call.

"Can I come?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because she is confused."

"What does that mean?"

"She has significant memory impairment documented after traumatic injury. Staff say she has been treated under the name Anna Bell for eighteen months."

David felt something inside him split.

Eighteen months.

While he buried an empty coffin.

While Lily cried herself to sleep.

While Laura moved into Claire's side of the closet.

Claire had been alive in a facility.

"Does she know who she is?"

"Not consistently."

"Did you show her a photograph?"

"No. We're handling this carefully."

"Did you say my name?"

Silence.

"Elena."

Ruiz lowered her voice.

"She said it first."

David could not breathe.

"What?"

"When I entered the room, she looked at my wedding ring. Then she asked whether a man named David still lived by the river."

David stood there with tears running down his face.

Lily was watching him.

"She remembers me."

"Something."

"She remembers me."

Lily grabbed his sleeve.

"Tell her I'm here."

David put the phone on speaker.

"Lily is with me."

Ruiz's voice softened.

"Hi, Lily."

"Tell Mom I'm here."

"I will."

"Tell her I waited."

David closed his eyes.

Rachel turned away.

Ruiz promised she would.

Then the detective's tone changed.

"David, there's more."

Of course there was.

There had been more behind every door.

"Facility records list Laura Mercer as Anna Bell's legal guardian."

"That's impossible."

"The guardianship paperwork is forged."

"How?"

"Your signature is on it."

David stared at the phone.

"I never signed anything."

"I know."

"Who notarized it?"

"Mark Vale."

The family attorney.

The man now missing.

Ruiz continued.

"Dr. Reed approved a diagnosis stating A.B. lacked capacity to identify relatives and had no verified immediate family."

"But Laura was listed as guardian."

"Yes."

"So she knew."

"Yes."

David looked at Lily.

Laura had known Claire was alive every day she lived in Claire's house.

Every night she slept beside Claire's husband.

Every morning she made breakfast for Claire's daughter.

"Why?"

"We found financial records."

Ruiz sent photographs.

David opened them.

Claire's estate had contained a trust created by her father.

Most of it was designated for Lily.

Laura served as temporary trustee only if Claire was dead and David was judged unable or unwilling to administer the assets.

David had voluntarily let Laura handle it because she had told him financial paperwork triggered her grief too much to make him suffer through it.

More than three million dollars had moved through Laura's control.

Hundreds of thousands had vanished.

David stared at the numbers.

"She needed Claire dead."

"Legally dead," Ruiz said.

"But not actually."

"Apparently."

"Why keep her alive?"

"We don't know."

David did.

"Because Claire knew where the money was going."

Possibly.

Or because Laura had not intended Claire to survive the crash.

The thought made him cold.

Two hours later, David and Lily were driven to Havenridge North.

A child advocate accompanied Lily.

Rachel came too.

The facility's medical wing smelled of disinfectant and old carpet.

Staff had been separated for interviews.

Several claimed they believed Anna Bell was genuinely an unidentified accident survivor placed under private guardianship.

Others had already requested attorneys.

David saw Claire through glass before entering.

She sat near a window.

She was thinner than he remembered.

Her hair barely reached her shoulders.

There was a pale scar near her temple.

She held a cup in both hands.

David stopped walking.

Every memory he had spent eighteen months forcing himself to bury returned at once.

Claire laughing in the kitchen.

Claire asleep with Lily curled against her.

Claire crying during their first argument after Lily was born.

Claire dancing barefoot at their wedding reception.

Claire saying she would call him after her drive home.

Then never calling.

Lily whispered, "Mom."

Claire looked up.

The cup slipped from her hands.

It did not break.

A nurse stepped forward.

Claire did not notice.

She stared at Lily.

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Lily moved toward the door.

The child advocate gently stopped her.

Claire stood.

Her knees nearly failed.

David pressed one hand against the glass.

"Claire."

She looked at him.

For several seconds, there was no recognition.

Then her face folded.

"David?"

He began crying.

Claire placed her palm against the other side of the glass.

David covered it with his own.

Lily slipped beside him.

Claire looked down.

Her eyes widened.

"My baby."

Lily sobbed.

The staff opened the door.

No one needed to tell her to go slowly.

Lily walked into the room.

Claire knelt.

They stared at each other.

Then Lily ran.

Claire caught her.

The sound Claire made was not quite a laugh and not quite a cry.

David stood at the doorway, unable to move.

After a long moment Claire looked over Lily's shoulder.

She saw him.

She did not smile.

She whispered something.

David stepped closer.

"What?"

Her eyes filled with fear.

"Is Laura here?"

David shook his head.

"No."

May you like

Claire held Lily tighter.

"Don't let her find me."
