Chapter 11 - what david buried)

For twenty minutes, David believed Laura was trying to make him lose control.

Then he remembered the lake.

Not Merritt House.

A different lake.

A different year.

Eight years earlier.

Claire had been pregnant before Lily.

A boy.

They lost the baby late in the pregnancy.

There had been no funeral.

Claire could not bear one.

They planted a tree at the edge of her father's property instead.

David buried a small wooden memory box beneath it.

Inside were hospital bracelets.

A sonogram.

Letters Claire wrote to the child they never met.

Laura knew about it.

Claire knew.

David knew.

Almost no one else did.

"What could that have to do with Mark?" Ruiz asked.

David looked at Laura through the glass.

"I don't know."

Claire was brought into the discussion later.

When David mentioned the box, her face changed.

"I put something else in there."

"What?"

"A flash drive."

Ruiz leaned forward.

"When?"

"After I found the first suspicious transactions. Before the red book."

"What's on it?"

"Copies of emails between Laura and Mark."

David stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I was going to."

"When?"

Claire lowered her eyes.

"After I knew whether Laura was involved."

David understood.

Claire had hoped her sister was innocent.

Even while building evidence against her.

That hope had almost killed her.

The property where the memorial tree stood had been sold after Claire's declared death.

Laura handled the sale.

The new owners gave police permission to search.

David led them to the tree.

The ground beneath it had been disturbed recently.

The memory box was gone.

But something remained.

A broken piece of black plastic.

Part of a flash drive casing.

Ruiz stared at it.

"Someone found it."

David looked toward the road.

"Laura."

Or Mark.

They searched the surrounding area.

Nothing.

Then the new homeowner approached.

"Actually, there was a guy here a few days ago."

Ruiz turned.

"What guy?"

"Said he used to work for the family. He dug around that tree."

"Did you see his face?"

The homeowner checked his doorbell camera.

Mark Vale appeared on the footage.

He carried a shovel.

When he left, he held a wooden box.

Timestamp: three days earlier.

Before Lily was tied up.

Before David opened Claire's cabinet.

Mark had already begun collecting evidence.

He knew the trail was collapsing.

Ruiz issued updated alerts.

Airports.

Train stations.

Border crossings.

Rental agencies.

Then another break came.

A traffic camera captured Mark's vehicle thirty miles outside the city.

He was not driving toward the border.

He was driving south.

Toward Laura's childhood hometown.

Toward the house where Claire and Laura grew up.

The property had been empty for years.

Their father left it equally to both daughters.

After Claire's death, Laura inherited Claire's share.

Police arrived before midnight.

Mark's vehicle sat behind the house.

The front door was open.

Inside they found signs someone had left in a hurry.

Food.

Clothes.

Medical supplies.

Dr. Reed's briefcase.

But no Mark.

No Reed.

Upstairs, Ruiz found a room filled with old family photographs.

Claire winning a school award.

Claire graduating.

Claire standing beside their father at the company opening.

In photograph after photograph, Laura stood beside her.

Sometimes smiling.

Sometimes partly cut off by the frame.

David understood Evelyn's words.

Money was proof.

Laura had spent her life measuring herself against Claire.

At the end of the hallway was Laura's old bedroom.

Inside, police found the wooden memory box.

Empty.

The flash drive was gone.

But beneath the box was something else.

A recent photograph.

Lily.

Taken outside Briarwood Elementary.

On the back Mark had written:

SHE KNOWS WHERE CLAIRE PUT THE ORIGINAL.

David's blood ran cold.

Mark had been watching Lily before the backpack incident.

That explained Laura's escalating fear.

She needed Lily to reveal the evidence before Mark decided the child was a threat.

Ruiz found a second note in Dr. Reed's briefcase.

A motel receipt.

Two rooms.

One paid under an alias Mark had used before.

The motel was only twelve miles away.

Police surrounded it.

They found Dr. Reed in Room 6.

Alone.

Terrified.

Mark had abandoned him two hours earlier.

Reed asked for a lawyer.

Then changed his mind when Ruiz showed him the warrant.

"I didn't cause the crash."

"Who did?"

"Mark."

"Who planned it?"

Reed stared at the table.

"Laura knew."

"Did Laura order it?"

"I don't know."

"What was your job?"

Reed closed his eyes.

"Keep Claire compliant."

David stood behind the observation glass.

He felt sick.

Reed continued.

"Laura said Claire was unstable. She said she was protecting Lily."

"Did you believe her?"

"At first."

"And later?"

Silence.

"How long did you know Claire was not legally Anna Bell?"

"Almost immediately."

"Why continue?"

"Money."

Ruiz asked about the forged guardianship.

Reed admitted signing false medical evaluations.

He admitted recommending unnecessary medication.

He admitted helping move Claire between facilities.

Then Ruiz asked the most important question.

"Where is Mark Vale?"

Reed looked toward the camera.

"He went to get the box."

"What box?"

"Four seventeen."

"The bank box is frozen."

Reed shook his head.

"Not the bank."

Ruiz went still.

"What are you talking about?"

Reed swallowed.

"Claire had two Box 417s."

May you like

David felt the ground shift again.

"One was a decoy."
