Chapter 9 - THE ENVELOPE IN THE WALL

Emily and Vanessa moved quickly through the tunnel.
The passage ended beneath Bellweather House in a storage room behind the wine cellar. Vanessa pressed a hidden latch, and part of the wall opened.
They stepped into the basement.
The monitors in Daniel’s glass control room were still on.
Every screen displayed the same message.
WELCOME HOME, EMILY.
She stopped.
“Did Daniel do that?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“He doesn’t know the master system can display text.”
“Arthur?”
“Possibly.”
A new message appeared.
DO NOT TRUST THE WOMAN BESIDE YOU.
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa laughed without humor.
“How convenient.”
“Can you control the system?”
“No.”
“Who can?”
“My mother. Arthur. Possibly the trust administrator.”
“Who is that?”
“No one has seen the administrator in years. Instructions arrive through attorneys.”
A noise came from the floor above.
A cabinet door closed.
Someone was in the kitchen.
Emily picked up a heavy flashlight.
Vanessa opened the basement door slowly.
They climbed the stairs.
The modern white kitchen was empty.
The broken plate from the previous night still lay across the floor. Emily’s wedding ring remained on the counter.
Beside it was a black envelope.
Margaret had somehow known it would be there.
Emily approached cautiously.
Her name was written across the front.
Not Mrs. Daniel Mercer.
Emily Warren.
She touched the seal.
Vanessa caught her hand.
“We need to check for wires or chemicals.”
“It’s paper.”
“In this family, paper has caused more deaths than guns.”
They carried the envelope to the dining table.
Vanessa used a letter opener to break the seal.
Inside were three documents and a brass key.
The first document was a copy of Emily and Daniel’s marriage certificate.
A red line had been drawn through Daniel’s name.
The second was an original property deed dated nearly seventy years earlier.
Bellweather House had belonged to a woman named Eleanor Vale.
The third was a handwritten letter.
Emily began to read.
To the daughter of Thomas Warren,
If you are reading this, the Mercer family has brought you into Bellweather House exactly as your father predicted.
They believe your marriage can legalize their claim.
They are mistaken.
The original deed grants Bellweather House not to the Mercer family but to Eleanor Vale and her surviving bloodline. Thomas discovered that Eleanor had a child whose identity was hidden after the property was stolen.
Your father located that bloodline.
Before he died, he placed the proof inside the room opened by the enclosed key.
Emily stopped.
“Where is the room?” she asked.
Vanessa took the brass key.
A small symbol was engraved on it: a bell surrounded by thorns.
“I’ve seen this mark.”
“Where?”
“In the old nursery.”
They went upstairs.
The nursery had not been used in decades. Daniel kept it locked, claiming the floor was unsafe. Vanessa opened the door with a key from her ring.
Dust covered the furniture.
Faded clouds were painted across the walls. A wooden cradle stood near the window.
Vanessa moved a wardrobe aside, revealing the bell-and-thorns symbol carved into the wall.
Emily inserted the brass key.
A narrow panel opened.
Behind it was a room barely large enough for two people.
Shelves held boxes of letters, photographs, and legal records. At the center stood an old film projector.
Emily found a metal case labeled THOMAS WARREN.
Inside was a reel of film.
Vanessa connected the projector.
The image flickered against the wall.
Emily’s father appeared.
He looked tired and frightened.
“My name is Thomas Warren,” he said. “If this recording has been found, I may already be dead.”
Emily gripped the edge of the shelf.
Thomas continued.
“Charles Mercer acquired Bellweather House through forgery, coercion, and murder. The rightful heir is alive. Her identity has been concealed to protect her.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
Thomas held up a photograph.
The image was blurred, but it showed a young woman standing beside Rose.
Emily’s mother.
“The heir gave birth to a daughter,” Thomas said. “That daughter carries the legal claim to Bellweather House.”
Emily’s heart pounded.
“Me,” she whispered.
But Thomas shook his head on the recording.
“The child is not my daughter Emily.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“The child is Vanessa Mercer.”
Vanessa staggered backward.
“No.”
Thomas continued.
“Vanessa is not the biological daughter of Richard and Margaret Mercer. She is Eleanor Vale’s great-granddaughter and the rightful owner of Bellweather House.”
Vanessa stared at the wall.
“This is impossible.”
Emily looked at her.
“Then why did Daniel need me?”
Thomas seemed to answer from the recording.
“My daughter Emily is the designated witness and successor to my legal claim. Only she can authenticate the evidence. If Daniel marries her, he may attempt to control her testimony.”
A shadow crossed the doorway.
Daniel entered the nursery.
His face was bruised. A bandage covered one side of his head.
May you like
He held Vanessa’s missing gun.
“Thank you,” he said. “I’ve been searching for this room for seven years.”
