Chapter 12 - THE FIRE BENEATH THE HOUSE

Arthur moved toward Daniel.
Daniel raised the remote.
“One more step, and the server room burns.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You installed an incendiary system?”
“Father did.”
Arthur stopped.
The security monitors changed.
A countdown appeared.
05:00
Daniel smiled.
“The basement contains enough chemical fuel to destroy the archive and collapse the eastern foundation.”
Emily’s phone vibrated.
A message appeared from the hidden system.
THE REMOTE IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE FIRE.
She looked at Daniel.
He was bluffing.
Or someone wanted her to believe he was.
The administrator’s voice came through the screen.
“Daniel Mercer, disable the device.”
“Confirm my inheritance.”
“The review cannot proceed under coercion.”
“Then everyone loses.”
Margaret struggled to sit upright in her hospital bed.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“You chose them.”
“I tried to save you.”
“You always protected Vanessa.”
“Because your father trained you to become cruel.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You watched him do it.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The admission struck harder than any denial.
“I was afraid of him,” she said. “And I allowed that fear to become your childhood.”
Daniel’s hand trembled around the remote.
The countdown reached 04:12.
Emily stepped forward.
“You don’t want to destroy the house.”
Daniel turned the knife toward her.
“You know nothing about what I want.”
“You spent seven years trying to inherit it.”
“I spent my entire life preparing for it.”
“Then the remote is useless.”
His eyes flickered.
Emily had guessed correctly.
“You’re lying,” she said.
Daniel pressed the button.
A deep mechanical sound came from beneath the floor.
Smoke began rising through the ventilation grate.
Arthur cursed.
The message on Emily’s phone changed.
THE FIRE IS REAL. THE REMOTE IS NOT THE ONLY TRIGGER.
“Who is sending these messages?” Emily demanded.
No one answered.
The countdown continued.
03:45
Arthur opened the office cabinet and pulled a fire suppression lever.
Nothing happened.
“System disabled,” he said.
Vanessa looked toward the screen.
“Administrator, activate emergency controls.”
“Authority denied.”
“People will die.”
“Preservation protocol is in effect.”
Emily stared at the dark silhouette.
“The administrator wants the house to burn.”
Arthur’s expression changed.
“Not the house. The evidence.”
Daniel looked confused.
“You didn’t activate it?” Emily asked him.
“I pressed the remote.”
“But someone armed the system before you arrived.”
The countdown had begun the moment he entered, too quickly for a manual sequence.
Daniel looked at the remote in his hand as if seeing it for the first time.
Vanessa understood.
“You were given that device.”
Daniel said nothing.
“By Graham?” she asked.
Smoke thickened.
The countdown reached 03:10.
Margaret shouted through the screen.
“The lake tunnel. Leave now.”
“What about the archive?” Emily asked.
“Take the deed and bloodline records.”
Arthur collected the documents.
Daniel blocked the doorway.
“No one leaves until the review confirms me.”
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Daniel, the administrator used you.”
“I am the beneficiary.”
“You are the distraction.”
Emily looked at the screen.
“Who benefits if the house and all evidence are destroyed?”
The administrator disconnected.
Every frame went black.
At the same moment, the office door locked automatically.
02:42
Arthur struck the glass window with a chair.
It cracked but did not break.
Daniel dropped the knife and tried the door controls.
“They’ve overridden my access.”
“For once, you’re trapped with everyone else,” Vanessa said.
Daniel glared at her.
“This is your fault.”
“No. This is what our family has always done. We blame the nearest person while the real enemy walks away.”
Emily used the brass key on a small panel near the desk.
It fit.
A section of the wall opened, revealing a narrow service shaft.
“The house is giving us a way out,” she said.
Arthur entered first with the documents. Vanessa followed.
Emily turned toward Daniel.
He remained beside the desk.
“Come with us.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to crawl behind you?”
“I expect you to choose whether you want to live.”
01:56
Smoke covered the ceiling.
Daniel looked toward the marriage certificate on the desk.
Then he followed.
They crawled through the service shaft as heat spread behind them.
The passage descended steeply and opened near the basement tunnel.
Arthur led them toward the boathouse.
Behind them, an explosion shook the walls.
The lights failed.
Emily heard Daniel cry out.
She turned and found that part of the ceiling had collapsed between them.
Daniel was trapped on the other side.
“Emily!”
She could barely see him through the dust.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“We have to go.”
Daniel struck the fallen stones.
“Don’t leave me!”
Emily thought about the broken plate, the cameras, the forged documents, and the fear he had placed inside her.
Then she thought about what leaving him there would make her carry forever.
She handed the deed to Vanessa.
“Take Arthur and go.”
“What are you doing?”
May you like
“I’m not letting this house decide who I become.”
Emily crawled back toward Daniel.
