Chapter 15 - THE BROTHER BEHIND THE MASK

The vault door closed behind Emily, Vanessa, and Arthur.

Metal locks engaged automatically.

Arthur turned toward the control panel.

“It is sealed from the outside.”

The masked man on the screen laughed softly.

“Still searching for exits, Arthur?”

Arthur went still.

“You know me.”

“I know everything you failed to protect.”

Vanessa stepped toward the projector.

“Are you Gabriel Warren?”

The man removed one glove.

A pale scar crossed the back of his hand in the shape of a crescent.

Margaret had described the same birthmark when they left the hospital.

“Yes,” he said.

Emily’s heartbeat quickened.

“Show us your face.”

“Soon.”

“Release Daniel.”

Daniel looked at her with disbelief.

“After everything I did, you still want to save me?”

“I want him alive to answer for it.”

Gabriel tightened the rope around Daniel’s chest.

“My brother has already answered many questions.”

“I am not your brother,” Daniel said.

“No. But we were raised by the same kind of men.”

Gabriel walked into view.

He wore a dark coat and a smooth black mask that covered the upper half of his face.

“Richard Mercer stole me from our mother,” he said. “He gave me to a family loyal to the trust. I was raised to become the next Keeper.”

Emily looked around the empty shelves.

“Where is the archive?”

“Moved.”

“Where?”

“To a place no Mercer can reach.”

“Why did you bring me to Bellweather House?”

“To open Thomas’s records.”

“You could have contacted me.”

“And told you that your husband was a predator, your marriage was a trap, and your dead father had designed you as a legal weapon? Would you have believed me?”

“You let Daniel hurt me.”

Gabriel’s voice remained calm.

“I activated the alarm when he attacked you.”

“You watched before that.”

“I needed evidence.”

“You sound exactly like everyone else who claims cruelty was necessary.”

For the first time, Gabriel said nothing.

Vanessa stepped beside Emily.

“You added the household rule.”

“Yes.”

“You used Daniel’s greed.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he would marry Thomas’s daughter.”

“I gave him enough information to reach that conclusion.”

“And Laura?”

Gabriel looked toward Daniel.

“Laura discovered me before I was ready.”

“Did you cause her death?” Emily asked.

“No.”

“Is she dead?”

Daniel shouted, “Do not listen to him!”

Gabriel pressed a control.

A second screen activated.

A hospital room appeared.

A blonde woman sat beside a window, older than in the engagement photograph but unmistakably alive.

Emily stared at her.

“Laura.”

The woman looked into the camera.

“Emily, Vanessa, I am sorry it took so long.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“You survived.”

“Barely.”

Daniel struggled against the chair.

“She is lying.”

Laura’s expression hardened.

“You left me in a sinking car.”

“I went for help.”

“You called Vanessa and told her to destroy the documents.”

Vanessa whispered, “I thought you died.”

“I was found downstream by Gabriel’s people. He kept me hidden because Graham was monitoring every hospital.”

Emily looked at Gabriel.

“You saved her.”

“I also prevented her from leaving.”

Laura’s face changed.

“Tell them the whole truth.”

Gabriel remained silent.

Laura continued.

“He said I could not return until Daniel brought Emily into Bellweather House.”

Emily felt anger rising again.

“You imprisoned her for seven years?”

“I protected the operation.”

“You imprisoned her.”

Gabriel stepped closer to the camera.

“I did what Thomas expected me to do.”

“Our father is dead. Stop using him to excuse your choices.”

The calmness in Gabriel’s posture broke.

Only slightly.

But Emily saw it.

Daniel began laughing.

“You thought I was the monster in this family.”

“You are,” Emily said. “You are simply not the only one.”

Arthur examined the vault walls.

“Why bring us here now, Gabriel?”

“Because the Bellweather evidence is incomplete.”

“What is missing?”

“The original ledger.”

Margaret had not mentioned a ledger.

“What does it contain?” Vanessa asked.

“The names of every person whose family profited from the stolen archive. Judges, politicians, bankers, industrialists, and trust officials.”

“Where is it?”

Gabriel looked toward Emily.

“Thomas gave it to Rose.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“My mother said she knew nothing.”

“Your mother has lied to you since birth.”

“To keep me alive.”

“That excuse seems to satisfy you when she uses it.”

The words struck their target.

Emily forced herself to remain calm.

“What do you want from us?”

“Return to Rose’s apartment. Find the ledger. Bring it to me.”

“And if we refuse?”

Gabriel placed a hand on Daniel’s shoulder.

Daniel’s anger vanished.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“You should refuse,” Daniel said quickly. “He will kill everyone once he has it.”

Gabriel tilted his head.

“Daniel finally understands consequences.”

Vanessa looked at the screen showing Laura.

“What happens to her?”

“She comes home when the ledger is secured.”

Laura stood.

“No. I am done waiting.”

She reached toward something outside the camera frame.

The image shook.

An alarm began sounding on Gabriel’s side of the connection.

He turned sharply.

“What did you do?”

Laura held up a small device.

“I opened every secured door in the facility.”

Gabriel left Daniel and moved out of view.

Shouting erupted through the speakers.

Daniel pulled against the ropes until the chair fell sideways.

“Emily!” he shouted. “The projector console has a release control for your vault.”

Arthur searched the panel.

“Which one?”

“The bell symbol.”

Emily found it.

Before she could press it, Daniel said, “Wait.”

She looked at the screen.

His face was pressed against the floor.

“There is something you need to know before you go back to Rose.”

“What?”

“The person who shot Margaret was not Gabriel.”

“Who was it?”

“I saw the shooter leave the mansion.”

“Then tell us.”

Daniel laughed weakly.

“You still believe your mother was protecting you.”

Emily stared at him.

“Daniel.”

“The shooter wore Vanessa’s coat and glove, but it was not Vanessa.”

“Who?”

A gunshot sounded from Gabriel’s location.

Daniel flinched.

The screen flickered.

He spoke quickly.

“Rose has been working with Graham since before our wedding.”

Emily stopped breathing.

“No.”

“She gave him your schedule. She approved the first meeting at the charity dinner. She knew why I needed to marry you.”

“You’re lying.”

“She signed the witness page.”

Emily remembered the wedding documents.

Vanessa had interrupted her repeatedly.

Daniel continued.

“Ask yourself why Rose never tried to stop the wedding. Ask why the house system knew exactly when you called her. Ask why she told you Thomas abandoned you instead of telling you he was murdered.”

Vanessa touched Emily’s arm.

“Do not believe him without evidence.”

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“The evidence is inside Emily’s wedding ring.”

The ring had arrived at Rose’s apartment that morning.

Emily had locked it in a drawer.

“What is inside it?” she asked.

“A storage chip.”

“What does it contain?”

“The original video from the night Thomas Warren died.”

The projector image broke into static.

Gabriel’s masked face appeared for one final second.

“Do not return to Rose,” he said.

Then the screen went black.

The vault locks released.

Arthur pulled the door open.

The warehouse above them was silent.

Emily’s phone began ringing.

The screen displayed Rose’s name.

She answered without speaking.

Her mother’s breathing was unsteady.

“Emily,” Rose whispered. “You need to listen carefully. Someone has entered the apartment.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m hiding in the bedroom.”

“Call the police.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the man outside says he is your father.”

Emily’s body went cold.

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

A door creaked through the phone.

Rose began to cry.

Then a man’s voice came across the line.

Not Gabriel’s voice.

Not Daniel’s.

A voice Emily had heard only once before, on an old film inside Bellweather House.

“Hello, Emily,” Thomas Warren said. “It is time for you to learn which one of us actually died in that car.”
