Chapter 13 - THE MAN SHE REFUSED TO BECOME

The tunnel shook again.
Emily moved stones with both hands until her fingernails tore.
Daniel pushed from the other side.
“Faster!” he shouted.
“Stop shouting and move the lower stones.”
He obeyed.
Together, they created an opening large enough for Daniel to crawl through.
The instant he reached her side, he seized her shoulders.
“Where are the documents?”
Emily stared at him.
Even after she saved him, he thought only of ownership.
“Vanessa has them.”
Daniel released her and started toward the boathouse.
Emily followed.
They emerged seconds before flames tore through the basement windows of Bellweather House.
Arthur and Vanessa stood near the lake.
The eastern side of the house glowed orange. Glass broke outward. Smoke rolled above the roof.
Daniel ran toward Vanessa.
“Give me the deed.”
Arthur stepped between them.
Daniel struck him.
Vanessa backed toward the water, clutching the document case.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
“Those are not local police,” Arthur said. “Margaret contacted federal investigators.”
Daniel stopped.
His face changed as black vehicles appeared at the far end of the road.
He looked toward the lake.
A speedboat was tied beside the dock.
Vanessa saw it too.
“Don’t,” she said.
Daniel ran.
Emily tried to block him, but he shoved her aside. He jumped into the boat and started the engine.
Vanessa followed to the edge of the dock.
“Daniel!”
He looked back.
For one second, Emily saw the frightened child Margaret had described beneath the violent man he had become.
Then he accelerated into the smoke.
Federal agents reached the boathouse moments later.
They secured the property, collected the deed, and transported Emily, Vanessa, and Arthur to separate locations for questioning.
Detective Graham disappeared before he could be arrested.
By morning, most of Bellweather House still stood, but the basement server room had been destroyed.
The hidden nursery archive survived.
So did Thomas Warren’s film.
Daniel’s boat was found drifting near the northern shore.
There was blood on the steering wheel.
Daniel was gone.
For three days, search teams examined the lake and surrounding forest. They found no body.
Margaret remained in the hospital under guard.
Arthur gave investigators the name of the private security company that had helped alter the recordings.
Vanessa admitted her role in monitoring Emily, preparing forged documents, and concealing evidence after Laura’s disappearance. In exchange for cooperation, she was released under supervision while the investigation continued.
Emily returned to her mother’s apartment.
Rose opened the door and pulled her into a desperate embrace.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Then Emily placed Thomas’s photograph on the table.
“You lied to me.”
Rose sat down slowly.
“I protected you.”
“That is what everyone keeps saying.”
“I knew what the Mercers could do.”
“You let me marry Daniel.”
“I didn’t know who he was until I saw the wedding announcement.”
“You could have told me then.”
Rose’s eyes filled with tears.
“Your father’s death taught me that truth does not always save people.”
“No. Sometimes it only gives them a chance to save themselves.”
Rose looked at the bruises on Emily’s face.
“I am sorry.”
Emily wanted to remain angry.
Instead, exhaustion overcame her.
Rose told her everything.
Thomas had discovered the original Bellweather deed while working for Richard Mercer. During his investigation, he met Anna Vale, the granddaughter of Eleanor Vale.
Anna became pregnant.
Vanessa was their child.
But Thomas was already in a relationship with Rose, and Rose was pregnant with Emily.
“It was complicated and painful,” Rose said. “But your father wanted to protect both children.”
“Did Margaret know he loved Anna?”
“She knew enough. Richard could not have children, and Margaret agreed to raise Vanessa as a Mercer. It protected Vanessa’s bloodline claim by hiding it inside the family that stole the property.”
“Then why didn’t Margaret expose the truth when Richard died?”
“Because Daniel had already become involved in the trust. And because the administrator threatened both of you.”
“Who is the administrator?”
Rose looked toward the window.
“I never knew his real name.”
“A man?”
“I assumed so.”
“Could it be Graham?”
“No. Graham was only an employee.”
“Then who gave the orders?”
Rose hesitated.
“Your father called the person the Keeper.”
Emily remembered the messages from the house.
The unseen system.
The shadow on the video call.
“What does the Keeper want?”
“To prevent anyone from owning Bellweather House.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Not if the house is hiding something more valuable than land.”
The next morning, a package appeared outside Rose’s apartment.
There was no delivery label.
Inside was Emily’s wedding ring.
A folded note lay beneath it.
YOU SAVED DANIEL.
NOW HE WILL COME FOR WHAT YOU TOOK FROM THE FIRE.
Emily turned the note over.
On the back was the bell-and-thorns symbol.

Below it was a set of coordinates.
They pointed to the warehouse owned by her father.
