Chapter 14 - THE ARCHIVE BELOW THE ASHES

Emily did not tell Rose about the note.
She photographed it, locked the wedding ring in a drawer, and called Vanessa.
They met in the parking garage beneath Margaret’s hospital.
Vanessa looked exhausted. She wore no makeup, and for the first time since Emily had known her, her clothes were wrinkled.
“You should not have contacted me,” Vanessa said. “Investigators are monitoring my calls.”
Emily showed her the coordinates.
Vanessa read the note twice.
“The warehouse.”
“Graham may be there.”
“Or Daniel.”
“Arthur said Daniel followed Graham to whoever was helping him.”
Vanessa looked at the symbol.
“The Keeper.”
“You know that name?”
“My mother used it once when I was a child. She and Arthur were arguing. She said the Keeper had changed the inheritance conditions.”
Emily leaned closer.
“The administrator controls the trust, the security system, and the evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Could the Keeper have sent the messages that helped me?”
“Helping you reach the archive also brought Daniel there.”
“So I was being guided.”
“Like a piece on a board.”
Emily looked toward the hospital elevators.
“Margaret knows more.”
They entered her guarded room through separate corridors.
Margaret was sitting up, reading documents. Her face tightened when she saw them together.
“You should both be in protective custody.”
“The Keeper contacted Emily,” Vanessa said.
Margaret closed the folder.
“What did the message say?”
Emily showed her.
Margaret looked genuinely afraid.
“You cannot go to the warehouse.”
“Why?”
“Because that is where Thomas discovered what Bellweather House was built to conceal.”
“Rose said there was something more valuable than the land.”
Margaret looked toward the guard outside.
Then she lowered her voice.
“During the Second World War, Eleanor Vale worked with several families to hide assets belonging to refugees. Documents, art, jewelry, account records, and proof of property ownership were stored beneath Bellweather House.”
“A hidden collection?” Emily asked.
“An archive. It contained evidence that powerful families had profited from stolen assets.”
“What happened to it?”
“Charles Mercer discovered part of the archive. He stole Bellweather House to control it.”
“And the Keeper?”
“The Keeper was supposed to protect the archive until the rightful families could be located.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Instead, the Keeper manipulated our family for decades.”
“The role passed from one person to another,” Margaret said. “Some protected the archive. Others used it.”
“Who is the current Keeper?”
“I don’t know.”
“You spoke to the administrator during reviews.”
“The voice was always altered.”
“Arthur worked for the trust.”
“Arthur was a guardian, not the Keeper.”
Emily placed the note on the bed.
“Why send us to the warehouse?”
Margaret looked at the coordinates.
“There is a secondary vault beneath it. Thomas used the location to copy records from Bellweather House.”
“Would the archive still be there?”
“Possibly.”
Vanessa picked up her coat.
“Then we go before Daniel does.”
Margaret grabbed her wrist.
“Daniel may already be there.”
“That is another reason to go.”
“No,” Margaret said. “Daniel is not the greatest danger.”
Emily studied her.
“Who is?”
Margaret looked at both women.
“The person who convinced Daniel that marrying Emily would make him owner.”
“The Keeper?”
Margaret nodded.
“The household requirement was never part of Charles Mercer’s original trust. It was added seven years ago.”
“When Daniel was engaged to Laura,” Emily said.
“Yes.”
The rule had been designed to bring Thomas Warren’s daughter into Bellweather House.
Not to help Daniel.
To draw Emily toward the hidden evidence.
“What happened seven years ago besides Laura’s disappearance?” Emily asked.
Margaret looked away.
“Arthur found proof that the Keeper was someone connected to Thomas.”
“Connected how?”
“He believed the Keeper was one of Thomas’s children.”
Vanessa stared at her.
“Emily and I are his only daughters.”
Margaret’s silence answered before she spoke.
“No.”
Emily felt cold.
“Thomas had another child?”
“A son.”
“Older or younger?”
“Older.”
“Who was his mother?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with shame.
“Me.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“You had a child with Thomas before you took me?”
“I was young. Richard discovered the pregnancy. The baby was taken away immediately after birth.”
“What was his name?” Emily asked.
Margaret swallowed.
“Gabriel.”
“Is he alive?”
“I don’t know.”
Emily picked up the note.
“If he is the Keeper, he has been controlling all of us.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“And he may believe Bellweather House belongs to him.”
Emily and Vanessa left the hospital by separate exits.
Arthur waited in an old vehicle two streets away.
When Emily showed him the coordinates, he did not try to stop them.
“I knew this day would come,” he said.
They reached the warehouse shortly before midnight.
The building appeared abandoned, its brick walls blackened from the old fire. Federal tape covered the main entrance, but a side gate had been cut open.
Inside, their flashlights revealed footprints in the dust.
Fresh footprints.
They followed them to a steel staircase descending underground.
At the bottom, a vault door stood open.
Beyond it was a long room filled with shelves.
Most were empty.
At the far end, a projector illuminated the wall.
Daniel appeared on the screen in a live video.
His face was pale, and dried blood marked his temple.
He sat tied to a chair.
A masked figure stood behind him.
“Emily,” Daniel said. “Do not believe anything he tells you.”
The masked figure placed one hand on Daniel’s shoulder.

Then a calm male voice filled the room.
“Welcome, sisters.”
