Chapter 9 - THE BLUE LEDGER

Claire received the call at 2:13 a.m.

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“I have something for you.”

“What?”

“The blue ledger.”

Claire sat upright.

“You found it?”

“I always had it.”

“Why didn't you give it to me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Ethan?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel paused.

“Of what you would do after reading it.”

Claire's voice hardened.

“I deserve to know.”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

Daniel gave her an address.

“Come alone.”

Claire refused.

“I won't.”

“Then bring Laura.”

Claire called Laura.

They arrived together.

Daniel was waiting in an old office.

He placed the ledger on the desk.

It was blue.

Worn.

Handwritten.

Claire opened it.

The first pages contained financial transactions.

Dates.

Amounts.

Names.

She kept turning.

Then she saw hers.

Her salary.

Her bonuses.

Her investments.

Her promotion schedule.

Every major financial change in her life.

Recorded.

Years before she met Ethan.

Claire looked up.

“How?”

Daniel's expression was grim.

“Your father worked with Richard.”

Claire froze.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

“They were business partners once.”

Claire stared at him.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

“My father hated Richard.”

“Later.”

“What happened?”

Daniel looked down.

“They had a dispute.”

“About what?”

“Money.”

Claire's hands tightened around the ledger.

Daniel continued.

“Your father discovered Richard was moving funds.”

“Where?”

“Into property companies.”

“Brooks?”

“Yes.”

Claire turned the pages.

There were notes in Richard's handwriting.

Then she found another section.

A plan.

A timeline.

A list of names.

Her name appeared at the top.

Underneath it was Ethan's.

Claire stopped breathing.

Laura leaned over.

“What does it say?”

Claire read silently.

Then she closed the ledger.

“What?”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“My father knew.”

Daniel nodded.

“And he tried to stop them.”

“How?”

“He disappeared from the business.”

Claire shook her head.

“My father didn't disappear.”

Daniel said nothing.

Claire looked at him.

“What aren't you telling me?”

Daniel finally answered.

“He made a deal.”

“With Richard?”

“Yes.”

“What deal?”

Daniel stared at the ledger.

“To keep you out of it.”

Claire's eyes filled with disbelief.

“Out of what?”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“The Mercer family's debt structure.”

Claire stood.

“So my father protected me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Richard still marry me to Ethan?”

“Because your father died.”

Claire froze.

Daniel's voice softened.

“And Richard believed the agreement died with him.”

Claire slowly sat down.

“What agreement?”

Daniel reached for the ledger.

He opened the final page.

A signature appeared.

Claire recognized it immediately.

Her father's.

Below it was another signature.

Richard Mercer.

And beneath both was a sentence Claire had never seen.

If Claire Mercer is ever brought into the Mercer financial structure, all previous protections become void.

Claire stared.

“They knew.”

Daniel nodded.

“And that's why your marriage mattered.”

Claire closed the ledger.

For eighteen months she had believed Ethan had exploited her.

Now she understood something worse.

He had inherited a plan.

And someone had been waiting for years for her to walk into it.
