Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Daniel Mercer agreed to meet Claire in a quiet hotel lounge.

He arrived alone.

He was forty-three.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

A calm expression that seemed almost unnatural.

Claire recognized the family resemblance immediately.

“You look like Ethan.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Unfortunately.”

Claire sat across from him.

“Why did you disappear?”

“Because staying was worse.”

“Did Richard force you out?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Richard didn't have to.”

“What does that mean?”

“I left because I discovered what the family had become.”

Claire waited.

Daniel continued.

“Your husband didn't become controlling overnight.”

“I know.”

“He learned it.”

“From Richard?”

Daniel nodded.

“Richard believed money gave him the right to control people.”

“And Diane?”

“Diane believed comfort was more important than truth.”

Claire looked down.

“And Ethan?”

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Ethan believed he could be both.”

Claire studied him.

“What happened to the company?”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Which company?”

“Brooks Residential.”

His expression changed.

“You know about Brooks?”

“Yes.”

“Then you know enough to walk away.”

“I bought it.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“I control it now.”

Daniel stared at her.

Then he laughed softly.

“You actually did it.”

Claire frowned.

“You knew?”

“I hoped someone would.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't know whether you were part of them.”

Claire stared at him.

“I'm Ethan's wife.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It should be.”

“Not in that family.”

Daniel looked at the table.

“You don't know what they did.”

“Then tell me.”

Daniel hesitated.

Finally, he said:

“Your marriage wasn't an accident.”

Claire felt the words hit harder than she expected.

“What?”

“Ethan didn't marry you only because he loved you.”

Claire said nothing.

“He married you because of your financial independence.”

She looked away.

Daniel continued.

“He knew your career was advancing. He knew your family had taught you to be financially careful. He knew you had assets.”

“How?”

“Richard investigated you.”

Claire's stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Before your wedding.”

She remembered the early days.

The questions.

The casual conversations.

The sudden interest in her salary.

She had thought it was normal.

Now it looked different.

Daniel reached into his coat.

He placed a small flash drive on the table.

“What's this?”

“Records.”

“Of what?”

“Your wedding.”

Claire stared at him.

“My wedding?”

“Not the ceremony.”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“The meeting before it.”

Claire felt her pulse quicken.

“What meeting?”

Daniel didn't answer.

“Watch it with Laura.”

“Why?”

“Because you'll need someone there when you see what Ethan said.”

Claire took the drive.

“Why are you helping me?”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Because I owe you an apology.”

“You've never met me.”

“I knew about you.”

“How?”

“I was the person who warned Ethan not to do it.”

“Do what?”

Daniel stood.

“Marry you.”

Claire stared at him.

“Why?”

Daniel looked back.

“Because I knew what he planned to take from you.”

Then he walked away.

Claire remained seated.

She didn't open the drive.

Not yet.

She called Laura.

“Can you come over?”

“Yes.”

“I have something.”

“What?”

“A recording.”

Laura's voice became serious.

“Of what?”

Claire looked toward the door.

“Ethan.”

That night, Claire and Laura watched the recording.

The video quality was poor.

The room was unfamiliar.

Ethan was younger.

Richard sat beside him.

Diane was there too.

And Daniel.

The conversation began casually.

Then Richard said:

“If she marries you, the debt becomes manageable.”

Claire's breath stopped.

Ethan laughed.

“She doesn't know anything about the debt.”

Diane asked:

“And if she finds out?”

Ethan answered:

“She won't.”

Claire stared at the screen.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

Ethan looked directly at Daniel.

“I don't need her forever.”

Daniel's voice came from the recording.

“What do you need?”

Ethan smiled.

“Long enough.”

The video ended.

Claire sat motionless.

Laura reached for the remote.

“Claire…”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

She stood.

“Now I understand.”

“What?”

Claire looked toward the dark window.

“He never wanted a wife.”

May you like

She picked up the flash drive.

“He wanted a solution.”
