Chapter 14 - THE PERSON NO ONE EXPECTED

The name was Victor Langley.

Claire had never heard it.

Yet the name appeared everywhere once they started looking.

Old property documents.

Bank records.

Corporate filings.

Private correspondence.

Victor Langley had never been part of the Mercer family.

He had never appeared publicly beside them.

But he had financed several of Richard's earliest ventures.

He had helped create the structures that eventually became Brooks Residential.

And he had known Claire's father.

More importantly, he had known Claire's mother.

Daniel finally explained.

“Your mother was the one who discovered the first transfer.”

Claire stared.

“What transfer?”

“Money from your father's company.”

“To Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Why would she allow it?”

“She didn't.”

Claire looked at the photograph again.

“Then why was she standing beside him?”

Daniel had no answer.

Laura examined the photograph.

“There may be another explanation.”

Claire looked at her.

“What?”

“This could have been taken at a business meeting.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I was there.”

Claire froze.

“You were there?”

“I was a child.”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“But I remember that night.”

“What happened?”

“My mother was crying.”

Claire's heart tightened.

“Why?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because your father had discovered the money was gone.”

Claire stared.

“And Victor?”

Daniel whispered:

“He told your father it was already too late.”

The room fell silent.

Claire looked at the boxes.

There had to be more.

She searched until she found a sealed envelope.

No name.

Only a date.

The date Claire's parents married.

Inside was a letter.

Not from her father.

Not from her mother.

From Victor.

Claire read it.

It contained a single warning.

Do not let the girl become part of the Mercer family.

Claire's breath stopped.

Laura read over her shoulder.

“This was written before you were born.”

Claire nodded.

“Why would he care?”

Daniel answered.

“Because he knew what would happen.”

“What?”

Daniel looked at her.

“He knew Richard would eventually come for your father's assets.”

Claire stared.

“And Ethan?”

Daniel looked down.

“Ethan was never the beginning.”

Claire's voice was barely audible.

“What was he?”

“The continuation.”

Claire suddenly understood.

The marriage.

The debt.

The house.

The guarantees.

The trust.

The ledger.

None of it had begun with Ethan.

It had begun decades earlier.

And Claire had unknowingly walked into the final stage of a plan created before she was born.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice said:

“Now you know my name.”

Claire froze.

“Victor?”

“Yes.”

“What do you want?”

“I want you to stop.”

“No.”

A pause.

“You sound like your mother.”

Claire's face went cold.

“What happened to her?”

Silence.

“Victor.”

The voice finally answered.

“Your mother discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That your father wasn't the only person protecting you.”

Claire's breathing slowed.

“Who else?”

Victor said:

“You.”

The call ended.

Claire stared at the phone.

Laura immediately asked:

“What did he say?”

Claire looked at her.

“He said my mother discovered the truth.”

“And?”

Claire shook her head.

“He said I was protecting myself before I even knew I was.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire.”

She turned.

“What?”

Daniel looked frightened.

“I think we misunderstood the trust.”

Claire frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“The trust wasn't created eighteen months ago.”

“What?”

“It was activated eighteen months ago.”

Claire stared.

“By whom?”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Your father.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“But he died years ago.”

May you like

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”
