Chapter 11 - THE BANK CONFIRMS EVERYTHING

At 8:04 a.m., Laura called.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“We got confirmation.”
Claire sat in her car.
“About the trust?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“The guarantees.”
Claire waited.
Laura took a breath.
“They are enforceable.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“How many?”
“All seven.”
Claire exhaled.
“And the forged signatures?”
“We have evidence.”
“Enough?”
“Enough to begin proceedings.”
Claire looked toward the mansion.
“And the third envelope?”
Laura hesitated.
“That is what I'm worried about.”
“Why?”
“Because it doesn't only concern Ethan.”
Claire frowned.
“Who else?”
“Your father.”
Claire's heart sank.
“What does he have to do with it?”
“We found an old account.”
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
Claire was silent.
Laura continued.
“The account was opened decades ago.”
“By whom?”
“Your father.”
Claire stared at the mansion.
“Is there money in it?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Laura didn't answer.
“Laura.”
“We don't know.”
“Then why does it matter?”
“Because the account was used as collateral.”
“For what?”
Laura said quietly:
“For Brooks Residential.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Her father's name.
Richard's name.
Brooks Residential.
Ethan.
Everything connected.
But then Laura said something else.
“And there's a beneficiary.”
Claire opened her eyes.
“Who?”
Laura paused.
“You.”
Claire felt the world go still.
“My father left me an account?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because it was structured to activate only under certain conditions.”
“What conditions?”
“Divorce.”
Claire stared.
“And?”
“Loss of control over your marital assets.”
Claire looked at the third envelope beside her.
Suddenly, she understood why Richard was afraid.
The third envelope didn't just contain evidence.
It might contain access.
Claire entered the mansion.
Ethan was waiting.
“You're back.”
Claire walked past him.
“I need to speak to everyone.”
Diane came downstairs.
Richard followed.
Claire placed the three envelopes on the table again.
“This ends today.”
Ethan laughed.
“You don't get to decide that.”
Claire looked at him.
“I already did.”
She opened the first envelope.
Divorce documents.
Ethan stared.
Then he looked at Richard.
“Dad.”
Richard said nothing.
Claire opened the second.
Eviction notice.
Diane's face went pale.
“You cannot do this.”
Claire looked at her.
“I can.”
Then Claire touched the third.
Ethan reached for it.
She stopped him.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Laura is coming.”
The doorbell rang.
Ding-dong.
Everyone froze.
The process server entered with Laura.
Claire looked at Ethan.
“You wanted an answer.”
Laura placed the banking file on the table.
“Now you get one.”
Ethan stared.
“What did the bank confirm?”
Claire looked at him.
“Everything.”
Richard whispered:
“Oh God.”
Ethan turned.
“Dad?”
Richard looked at his son.
“You should have listened to Daniel.”
Ethan's expression changed.
“What did you do?”
Richard said nothing.
Claire opened the third envelope.
And inside was a letter written twenty years earlier.
The handwriting belonged to Claire's father.
She read the first sentence.
Then stopped.
Because the letter began:
If you're reading this, it means Richard failed to keep his promise.

Claire looked up.
Richard was crying.
