Chapter 5 - THE FIRST COUNTERMOVE

Claire didn't confront Ethan.

Not yet.

She understood now that anger would only help him.

Instead, she became quieter.

More agreeable.

More predictable.

Ethan noticed the change.

He mistook it for surrender.

“You seem calmer,” he told her one morning.

“I've been thinking.”

“About us?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Claire smiled.

“I think you’re right.”

Ethan leaned back.

“About what?”

“Money.”

He looked pleased.

“I knew you'd understand eventually.”

Claire nodded.

“I understand everything now.”

He didn't hear the warning.

That was his mistake.

Over the next month, Claire allowed Ethan to believe she was preparing to transfer more of her salary into the family accounts.

She asked harmless questions.

She requested documents.

She pretended to be confused.

Every answer revealed another piece of the scheme.

Ethan's company had borrowed money against assets that weren't really his.

Richard had used Claire's previous contributions as evidence of financial stability.

Diane had signed expenses using a family credit account Claire had never authorized.

And Ethan had arranged for future income projections based on Claire's salary.

They had built an entire financial structure around money they assumed would keep arriving.

Claire stopped the flow quietly.

The first payment failed.

Then the second.

Ethan called her immediately.

“What happened?”

Claire looked at her phone.

“Nothing.”

“The payment didn't go through.”

“I'll check.”

“You need to fix it.”

“I will.”

She didn't.

The next morning, Ethan called again.

“This is embarrassing.”

Claire remained calm.

“I'll handle it.”

She didn't.

Then Richard called.

Then Diane.

Everyone suddenly needed Claire.

Everyone suddenly wanted to speak to her.

Everyone suddenly remembered how important she was to the family.

Claire listened.

She said very little.

Meanwhile, Laura filed the necessary documents.

The trust structure became active.

Brooks Residential was formally separated from the Mercer family's personal finances.

The mansion was protected.

The property remained secure.

But Claire didn't want revenge.

She wanted the truth exposed.

Then Laura found something.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

Claire looked up.

“What kind?”

“The original guarantee.”

“What about it?”

“It isn't the only one.”

Claire's expression changed.

“How many?”

Laura hesitated.

“Seven.”

Claire stared at her.

“Seven?”

“Seven separate agreements.”

“Under my name?”

“Yes.”

“Who signed them?”

Laura placed copies on the desk.

“That's the problem.”

Claire looked at the signatures.

Her own name appeared on every document.

But she hadn't signed any of them.

“Forgery?”

“Most likely.”

“Who witnessed them?”

Laura pointed.

“Different people.”

Claire studied the names.

One appeared repeatedly.

Martin Hale.

Claire immediately called him.

No answer.

She called again.

Still nothing.

Then she received a message.

Unknown number.

DO NOT TRUST MARTIN.

Claire stared at the screen.

Laura saw it.

“That's not random.”

Claire nodded.

“Someone wants me to think Martin betrayed me.”

“Or he did.”

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know.”

The next morning, Martin's office was empty.

His phone was disconnected.

His files were gone.

And on his desk was a single photograph.

Claire.

Taken outside the Mercer mansion.

On the back was one sentence.

You should have left when you had the chance.

Claire stared at it.

For the first time, she realized the battle was no longer only financial.

May you like

Someone was watching her.

And whoever it was knew exactly what she had discovered.
