Chapter 12 - THE LETTER FROM HER FATHER

Claire read the letter aloud.
Not because Richard deserved to hear it.
Because she wanted every word to exist in the room.
Her father had written about the Mercer family.
About money.
About trust.
About a business arrangement that had gone wrong.
He described Richard as ambitious.
Not evil.
Not cruel.
Ambitious.
But ambition had become desperation.
Richard had borrowed against property.
Then borrowed again.
Eventually, he needed outside capital.
Claire's father had helped.
The agreement was supposed to be temporary.
Then Richard changed the terms.
He moved assets.
Created companies.
Shifted debts.
And eventually, the arrangement became impossible to unwind.
Claire's father tried to leave.
Richard refused.
The final agreement created a protection for Claire.
If she was ever drawn into the Mercer family's financial structure, the original debt obligations would become visible.
That was the clause.
That was the secret.
Claire looked at Richard.
“You knew.”
Richard nodded.
“I knew.”
“You knew my father tried to protect me.”
“Yes.”
“And you married me to Ethan anyway.”
Richard looked down.
“I thought I could control it.”
Claire shook her head.
“You thought you could control me.”
Richard didn't answer.
Ethan stared at his father.
“You told me she was the solution.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Ethan turned toward Claire.
“You knew?”
“I learned.”
“When?”
“Long before tonight.”
Ethan looked betrayed.
“You lied to me.”
Claire smiled sadly.
“Now you know how it feels.”
Diane suddenly spoke.
“What about us?”
Claire turned.
“What about you?”
“We're family.”
Claire nodded.
“You were family when you needed my money.”
Diane's face hardened.
“You're punishing us.”
“No.”
Claire pointed toward the documents.
“I'm separating myself from you.”
Richard looked at the third envelope.
“What else is there?”
Claire hadn't finished reading.
There was one final page.
She unfolded it.
Her father's handwriting continued.
There is one person who knows where the remaining documents are.
Claire looked up.
“Who?”
Richard stared at the page.
He knew.
Claire saw it.
“Tell me.”
Richard remained silent.
Ethan demanded:
“Dad, tell her.”
Richard whispered one name.
“Martin.”
Claire froze.
“Martin Hale?”
Richard nodded.
“He has the original.”
Claire looked at Laura.
“Then why did he disappear?”
Richard shook his head.
“He didn't.”
“What?”
Richard looked toward the window.
“Someone took him.”
The room fell silent.
Claire's anger disappeared.
“What do you mean?”
Richard looked at her.
“The person who took him knows about the ledger.”
Claire's heart raced.
“Who?”
Richard didn't answer.
Then the mansion lights flickered.
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
The process server stepped outside.
Laura stood.
Claire turned toward the entrance.
A shadow moved beyond the glass doors.
Then disappeared.
Ethan whispered:
“Someone is here.”
Claire looked at the third envelope.
The answer she wanted was inside.
May you like
But now she realized the envelope might not be the end of the story.
It might be the beginning.
