The Heir They Stole at Birth / Chapter 9 / 16

Chapter 9 - The Vault That Was Never Empty

The iron door opened only a few inches.

Cold air escaped from the darkness beyond.

No one spoke.

The Director signaled two officers forward.

Weapons raised.

They pushed the door completely open.

Beyond it...

Wasn't another tunnel.

It was a room.

A massive underground vault.

Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling.

Steel cabinets lined every wall.

Rows of sealed wooden crates filled the center of the chamber.

Nathan frowned.

"This shouldn't exist."

His wife looked at him.

"You've never been here?"

He slowly shook his head.

"My father told me the tunnel ended at the river."

The Director stepped inside first.

Dust covered everything.

Except...

The footprints.

Fresh footprints.

Someone had been here recently.

The forensic team immediately began photographing the room.

One officer opened a cabinet.

Thousands of paper files.

Company records.

Court documents.

Old passports.

Birth certificates.

The Director carefully removed one folder.

Across the cover were handwritten words.

"Wolfe Family."

Nathan's breathing grew heavier.

His wife opened another cabinet.

Inside were dozens of videotapes.

Each one labeled with a different year.

The Director turned to the evidence team.

"Secure everything."

Another officer pried open one of the wooden crates.

Gold bars.

Perfectly stacked.

Dozens of them.

Nathan stared in disbelief.

"My father hid this?"

The Director looked around the room.

"No."

"This room is older than your father."

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

Before the Director could answer...

A technician called from the back wall.

"Sir!"

"We found another safe."

Hidden behind a shelf was a smaller steel door.

Unlike everything else...

This one wasn't covered in dust.

Someone had cleaned it.

Recently.

The technician entered the code found in an old notebook.

Nothing happened.

Nathan stepped closer.

He recognized the keypad.

It required fingerprints.

The technician sighed.

"We'll have to cut it open."

The young woman—Nathan's secret daughter—looked at the scanner thoughtfully.

"Wait."

She reached into her handbag.

Everyone watched in confusion.

She removed a tiny glass vial.

Inside...

Was a preserved fingerprint mold.

Nathan stared at it.

"Where did you get that?"

She answered quietly.

"My grandmother."

She pressed the mold against the scanner.

Beep.

Access Granted.

The steel safe slowly opened.

Everyone leaned forward.

There was no money.

No jewelry.

No weapons.

Only one old cassette recorder.

And a sealed envelope.

Across the envelope, written in elegant handwriting, were seven words that froze every person in the room.

"Play this only if Adrian returns alive."

The Director slowly lifted the cassette recorder.

Nathan whispered,

"Adrian is dead..."

A calm male voice suddenly echoed from somewhere deep inside the vault.

May you like

"No, Nathan."

"I'm standing behind you."
