The Heir They Stole at Birth / Chapter 1 / 16

Chapter 1 - The Pendant That Ended a Kingdom

Nathan Ashford never imagined that the woman kneeling before him would become the reason his empire collapsed.

The riding whip hung loosely in his hand, but its shadow stretched across the polished black marble floor like a threat that had lasted for years.

Crystal chandeliers bathed the mansion hall in golden light while dozens of invited guests stood frozen around the room. No one dared speak. No one dared breathe.

His wife remained on her knees.

Her cream blouse was torn at the shoulder where Nathan had grabbed her minutes earlier. A strand of dark hair clung to her tear-stained cheek. Yet despite the humiliation, her fingers never left the sapphire pendant resting against her chest.

Nathan looked down with cold satisfaction.

"So," he said quietly.

"Now you'll remember your place."

The words echoed through the enormous hall.

A few guests lowered their eyes.

Others secretly smiled.

They had seen this before.

Whenever Nathan Ashford became angry, someone always paid for it.

Across the room, Celeste Hart leaned elegantly against a velvet chair, crossing one leg over the other. Her emerald gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers while a crystal champagne flute rested effortlessly between her fingers.

She raised it slightly.

"Apologize," she said.

"Or we start again."

Several servants exchanged nervous glances.

Everyone knew what "again" meant.

The previous punishment had lasted three hours.

Nathan slowly circled his wife.

"You embarrassed me."

"You questioned my business."

"You accused Celeste."

"So now..."

He lifted the whip slightly.

"...you'll learn."

His wife finally looked up.

Instead of fear...

Nathan saw something else.

Relief.

A tiny smile touched the corner of her lips.

It disappeared almost instantly.

"You should hit me," she whispered.

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

"You should make everyone watch."

The guests stared.

Celeste narrowed her eyes.

Something wasn't right.

Nathan stepped closer.

"What game are you playing?"

The woman slowly wrapped her fingers around the sapphire pendant.

"I wanted everyone here."

Nathan laughed.

"You wanted witnesses?"

"No."

She looked directly into Celeste's eyes.

"I wanted an audience."

Silence swallowed the hall.

Nathan suddenly noticed several unfamiliar guests standing near the entrance.

He didn't recognize them.

Strange.

Every invitation had been personally approved.

So who were they?

Before he could ask...

His wife pressed a tiny hidden button beneath the sapphire.

A soft click.

Nothing happened.

Nathan smirked.

"That's your grand plan?"

She didn't answer.

Instead...

She reached into the pocket of her torn blouse and removed her phone.

One call.

Only one.

It connected immediately.

"Dad."

Her voice remained calm.

"You can destroy his life now."

Nathan laughed loudly.

"Your father?"

"The bankrupt judge?"

"He couldn't destroy a paper cup."

She smiled.

"You've never met my father."

Nathan's laughter slowly faded.

Behind him...

One unfamiliar guest quietly removed an earpiece.

Another glanced toward the mansion doors.

Celeste finally stood.

"Nathan."

Her voice was lower now.

"Take her phone."

Nathan reached forward.

His wife stepped backward for the first time that evening.

"No."

"You've already lost."

The mansion lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then...

Outside...

Powerful white searchlights exploded across every window.

The chandeliers trembled.

Heavy engines rumbled through the estate grounds.

Guests rushed toward the windows.

"What is happening?"

"There are vehicles outside!"

"Military?"

"No..."

"They're government."

Nathan's expression changed.

Impossible.

No investigation had ever reached this house.

No one even knew where the hidden records were.

Then...

The enormous front doors shook beneath a deafening impact.

Boom.

Another.

Boom.

Someone outside shouted through amplified speakers.

"Nathan Ashford!"

"This property is now under federal authority!"

Gasps spread across the hall.

Celeste's champagne glass slipped slightly in her hand.

Nathan clenched his jaw.

"They have nothing."

His wife looked directly at him.

"Are you sure?"

Before Nathan could answer...

A familiar voice suddenly echoed from hidden speakers throughout the mansion.

Celeste froze.

Nathan turned pale.

It was a recording.

A recording neither of them had heard before.

"My name is Celeste Hart."

"If you're hearing this..."

"...Nathan already believes he controls everything."

The champagne glass shattered against the marble floor.

May you like

Celeste whispered only one word.

"No..."
