Chapter 3 - The Man No One Recognized

The third impact splintered the ancient oak doors.
Dust drifted through the chandelier light.
Nathan instinctively stepped backward.
Not from the officers outside.
From the people inside.
Every unfamiliar guest slowly moved toward the center of the hall.
Their expensive evening clothes concealed something more important than wealth.
Authority.
One elderly man removed his tuxedo jacket.
Pinned beneath it was a small silver badge.
Another woman opened her evening purse.
Instead of lipstick...
She removed official identification.
One by one...
The strangers revealed themselves.
Nathan counted them.
Three.
Five.
Nine.
Twelve.
His heartbeat quickened.
His wife watched him carefully.
"You spent years making powerful enemies."
"You never noticed when they started working together."
Celeste grabbed Nathan's arm.
"We leave. Now."
Before they could move...
A calm voice spoke from the staircase.
"No one is leaving."
Every head turned upward.
A tall gray-haired man descended slowly, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit.
No one had seen him enter.
Yet he walked through the mansion as though he owned it.
Nathan frowned.
"Who are you?"
The man smiled politely.
"I've been asking myself the same question."
He reached the final step.
Then looked directly at Nathan's wife.
"My daughter."
"You've done well."
The hall fell silent.
Nathan stared at the man.
Impossible.
Her father was supposed to be a disgraced retired judge living in poverty.
So who...
...was this man?
The stranger reached into his coat and placed a sealed black envelope on the marble floor between Nathan and his wife.
"Open it."
Nathan hesitated.
His wife didn't.
She picked it up.
Broke the seal.
Inside was a single photograph.
The color drained from her face.
Nathan snatched it from her trembling hands.
His eyes widened.
The picture showed Nathan...
Standing beside Celeste...
Over the body of a man who officially died in a boating accident seven years earlier.

On the back of the photograph were six handwritten words.
"This is only the beginning."
