Chapter 12 - The Grave Without a Body

Rain began falling as the investigation reached the cemetery.
Thunder rolled across the distant hills.
Rows of stone monuments stood beneath ancient oak trees.
Nathan stopped before the largest family mausoleum.
He had visited it every year since childhood.
Flowers had always been placed there.
No one knew by whom.
The Director studied the ground.
"The footprints end here."
One officer pushed open the iron gate.
Inside the mausoleum stood six marble coffins.
Nathan counted them automatically.
His grandfather.
His grandmother.
His mother.
His father.
Two empty family plots.
Everything looked normal.
Until the forensic examiner noticed fresh scratches around one coffin.
"The seal was broken recently."
Nathan stepped closer.
"My mother's."
The Director nodded.
"Open it."
Several officers carefully lifted the heavy marble lid.
Nathan held his breath.
The coffin was empty.
Only a single white rose rested where the body should have been.
No remains.
No clothing.
Nothing.
Nathan staggered backward.
"We buried her."
"I carried the coffin."
The examiner looked inside again.
"No human remains were ever here."
The Director picked up a folded envelope lying beneath the rose.
It bore Nathan's name.
He opened it with trembling hands.
Inside was a handwritten message.
"My son,
If you are reading this, then someone has finally shown you the truth.
Do not search for me.
Search for your father.
He died years before the funeral."
Nathan read the last sentence twice.
Then a third time.
His wife slowly whispered,
"If that's true..."
"...who did we bury?"
At that exact moment, a black luxury sedan stopped outside the cemetery gates.
A lone elderly woman stepped out carrying an old leather suitcase.
Despite the rain, she wore an immaculate black dress and white gloves.
She walked directly toward the group.
The Director recognized her immediately.
His expression changed for the first time.
"You..."
The woman nodded politely.
"Yes."
"I've come because it's finally time."
Nathan stared at the stranger.
"Who are you?"
She smiled faintly.
"The woman who raised Adrian Wolfe."
She slowly opened the suitcase.
Inside were dozens of sealed letters...
And one faded photograph.
It showed three newborn babies lying side by side in the same hospital nursery.

On the back, someone had written a single sentence.
"Only one of them is the real Ashford heir."
