The Heir They Stole at Birth / Chapter 4 / 16

Chapter 4 - The Photograph That Should Never Exist

The hall fell into a silence so complete that even the crystal chandelier seemed afraid to sway.

Nathan's fingers tightened around the photograph until the edges bent.

It was impossible.

Seven years ago, Adrian Wolfe had died in a boating accident.

The police had closed the case.

The insurance companies had paid millions.

The newspapers had called it a tragedy.

Nathan himself had attended the funeral.

Yet the man lying motionless in the picture wore the exact suit Adrian had worn on the day he disappeared.

Nathan remembered because he had chosen it himself.

His breathing became uneven.

"Where did you get this?"

The gray-haired man smiled.

"I was hoping you'd ask."

Nathan's wife stepped forward.

"You knew Adrian?"

The stranger looked at her with unexpected warmth.

"I owed him my life."

Celeste's composure began to crack.

"Nathan..."

"We have to leave."

Nathan ignored her.

His eyes never left the photograph.

"Who took this?"

"Someone you paid to disappear."

Nathan slowly lifted his head.

"What?"

The stranger reached into his pocket and placed another envelope on the marble floor.

"This one contains a bank transfer."

Nathan refused to touch it.

His wife picked it up instead.

Inside was a payment receipt dated exactly one day after Adrian's funeral.

The transfer had been sent to a company that no longer existed.

Signed personally by Nathan Ashford.

Guests whispered loudly now.

"He paid someone after the funeral."

"What was he hiding?"

Celeste suddenly laughed.

A sharp, confident laugh.

"You still don't understand."

Everyone turned toward her.

"One photograph proves nothing."

She walked gracefully toward Nathan and gently took the picture from his hands.

"Digital images can be created."

"They can be altered."

"They can be bought."

She held the photograph high enough for everyone to see.

"If this is all they have..."

She tore it in half.

The room gasped.

The gray-haired man did not react.

Neither did Nathan's wife.

Celeste smiled triumphantly.

"There."

"No evidence."

The stranger simply looked at her.

"Did you check the back?"

Celeste froze.

Slowly...

She looked down at the torn pieces.

Between the layers of photographic paper...

A thin black memory card slid onto the marble floor.

No one moved.

Nathan stared at it.

Celeste's smile disappeared.

The stranger quietly said,

"That's the original."

Outside...

The front doors finally burst open.

Boots thundered across the marble entrance.

Dozens of federal officers entered in disciplined formation.

Yet none of them reached for Nathan.

Instead...

They walked directly toward the gray-haired man.

Every officer stopped.

Then saluted.

May you like

Nathan suddenly realized the stranger wasn't leading the investigation.

The investigation answered to him.
