Chapter 5 - The Name He Never Expected

The officers remained perfectly still.
No one spoke until the commander lowered his salute.
"Director."
One word.
That was all it took.
Nathan felt his stomach tighten.
Director?
Director of what?
The gray-haired man accepted a sealed folder from the commander without looking away from Nathan.
"You've had a long evening."
Nathan forced himself to smile.
"If you're with the government..."
"You already know my lawyers."
The man nodded.
"I do."
"They're waiting outside."
Nathan's confidence returned slightly.
"Good."
"They'll explain everything."
"They already have."
Nathan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"They've each signed sworn statements."
The room erupted.
"Impossible!"
"They wouldn't betray him!"
Nathan pulled out his phone.
He dialed his chief attorney.
Voicemail.
Another lawyer.
Unavailable.
Another.
Phone disconnected.
Celeste stepped closer.
"They've been arrested?"
The director answered calmly.
"No."
"They resigned."
Nathan's pulse quickened.
One resignation could happen.
Three was unlikely.
Eight?
Impossible.
His wife quietly watched him.
"You built your empire with loyalty."
"You forgot loyalty can change."
Nathan suddenly remembered something.
A private vault beneath the mansion.
No investigation could succeed without those documents.
No warrant had ever found it.
He smiled again.
"You've wasted your night."
The director tilted his head.
"Have we?"
He opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Nathan's hidden vault.
His hidden elevator.
His biometric lock.
His emergency escape tunnel.
Even the backup safe beneath the wine cellar.
Nathan's face lost all color.
"Who..."
"...entered my house?"
The director looked toward Nathan's wife.
"No one."
Nathan slowly turned.
His wife met his eyes.
"I built it."
Silence.
Nathan blinked.
"What?"
"The first architectural plans."
"I designed every secret room."
His mind raced backward.
Years earlier...
Before the marriage.
Before the renovations.
She had spent months working with engineers.
He had trusted her completely.
He suddenly understood.
Every hiding place...
Every escape route...
Every hidden vault...
She had known them from the beginning.
Celeste whispered,
"We're trapped."
Nathan answered quietly.
May you like
"No..."
"We were trapped years ago."
