Chapter 6 - The Counterattack
Within forty-eight hours, Derek and Patricia began spreading their version of the story.
They told relatives that Madison had suffered a breakdown. They claimed she was confused about medical expenses and had become paranoid because of her fertility problems.
There had never been fertility problems, but the lie was believable because it came with official-looking records.
Patricia contacted Madison’s employer and expressed concern about her mental condition.
Derek filed a request for temporary control of their shared finances.
He also claimed that Madison had stolen marital property when she left the house.
Rachel answered every accusation with documented evidence.
The police opened investigations into identity theft, forgery, insurance fraud, and financial exploitation.
Still, the process moved slowly.
Derek used the delay to pressure Madison.
He sent messages from unfamiliar numbers.
Pay what you owe, and this ends.
Sign over half the house.
Stop talking to the clinic.
Madison blocked every number and saved every message.
One evening, Claire found an envelope beneath her apartment door. Inside was a copy of Madison’s grandmother’s house deed with a yellow note attached.
You can lose this the easy way or the hard way.
For the first time, Madison considered giving Derek money just to make him disappear.
Rachel refused to let fear make the decision.
“This is not about money anymore,” she said. “If you pay him, he learns that threats work.”
Madison looked at the old photograph of her grandmother she carried in her wallet.
Evelyn had worked two jobs for most of her life. She had taught Madison that kindness did not require surrender.
Madison tore the unsigned settlement document in half.
Then she scheduled a final appointment at the clinic to sign corrected medical records and provide a formal statement.
