Chapter 1 - The Perfect Family

Three years earlier, Madison Cole believed she had married into the kind of family people admired.
Derek Lawson was charming, attentive, and confident. He remembered birthdays, opened doors, and spoke about building a future together. His mother, Patricia, welcomed Madison with expensive dinners and constant praise.
“You are the daughter I always wanted,” Patricia often told her.
Madison wanted to believe her.
She had lost both parents before turning twenty-five. Her grandmother, Evelyn, had raised her and left Madison a small house, an investment account, and a trust that could only be used for medical care, education, or buying a permanent home.
Madison never considered herself wealthy. The money represented years of her grandmother’s work, and she treated it carefully.
Derek’s family treated it differently.
At first, their questions seemed harmless.
How much was in the trust?
Could it be invested in Derek’s business?
Why was the house only in Madison’s name?
Madison laughed off the questions. Derek said his family was simply practical.
After the wedding, however, the suggestions became expectations.
Patricia wanted Madison to sell her grandmother’s house and help purchase a larger property where the entire Lawson family could gather. Derek wanted to borrow money for a fitness company he planned to launch with his brother.
When Madison refused, Derek smiled and kissed her forehead.
“You’re right,” he said. “We shouldn’t rush.”
But that night, she heard him speaking to Patricia on the balcony.
“She’ll agree eventually,” he whispered. “She just needs to feel like she has no other choice.”
Madison stood behind the curtain, barely breathing.
The next morning, Derek behaved as if nothing had happened.

Madison convinced herself she had misunderstood.
It was the first of many lies she told herself to preserve the image of a happy marriage.
