Chapter 5 - The Exit Plan
Attorney Rachel Kim helped Madison create a careful exit plan.
They froze the remaining trust funds, removed Derek’s access, changed the locks on the inherited house, and sent copies of the forged documents to a financial-crimes investigator.
Rachel warned Madison not to confront Derek alone.
“People who depend on control can become unpredictable when they lose it.”
Madison packed essential belongings while Derek was at work. She placed family photographs, legal papers, and her grandmother’s jewelry in the trunk of her car.
She planned to stay with her friend Claire until the police completed their investigation.
But Derek returned before she finished.
He noticed the suitcase by the stairs.
“Going somewhere?”
Madison forced herself to remain calm.
“I need time away.”
Derek looked toward his office.
The locked drawer was slightly open.
He walked inside and returned holding the Lawson Family Reimbursement folder.
“You searched my things.”
“You forged my signature.”
His face hardened.
“My family paid for your life. Your house should have been ours years ago.”
“There was no sixty-thousand-dollar debt.”
“You would have nothing without me.”
“I had my home before I met you.”
Derek stepped closer.
“You think that little trust makes you powerful?”
Madison’s phone was recording from inside her pocket.
“I think the truth makes me free.”
Derek noticed the small movement of her hand. He reached for the phone, but Madison moved away.
At that moment, Claire knocked loudly on the front door.
Derek stopped.
Madison walked past him, opened the door, and left with Claire.
From the car, she called Rachel and sent the recording to a secure account.
Derek stood on the porch watching her.
He did not call after her.
