Chapter 3 - The Locked Drawer

Madison began collecting evidence quietly.
She photographed bank statements and forwarded insurance records to a private email account. She requested billing information directly from every clinic Derek claimed had treated her.
The totals did not match his story.
The private clinic had billed Madison’s insurance for appointments she had never attended. Several charges were marked as fertility consultations, even though Madison and Derek had never discussed treatment.
When she contacted the clinic, the receptionist became nervous.
“Your husband usually manages your records,” the woman said.
“He is not authorized to speak for me anymore.”
There was a long silence.
“You may want to come in personally.”
Before Madison could schedule the appointment, Derek suddenly announced that they were moving.
He claimed his new business required them to live closer to the city. Madison refused to leave her grandmother’s house.
That night, Derek searched through the bedroom while he thought Madison was asleep.
After he left for work the next morning, she checked his office.
The bottom drawer of his desk was locked.
Madison found the key inside an old shoe box.
The drawer contained copies of her identification, medical records, blank financial forms, and a folder marked Lawson Family Reimbursement.
Inside was a list of payments that had never occurred.
There were also notes written in Patricia’s handwriting.
Convince her the treatment caused confusion.
Get power of attorney.
Transfer house before separation.
Madison took photographs of every page.
At the bottom of the folder, she found a clinic consent form carrying her forged signature. It authorized Derek to receive confidential information and make decisions if clinic employees considered Madison emotionally distressed.
She heard the front door open.
Derek was home two hours early.
Madison returned everything to the drawer, locked it, and slipped the key back into the shoe box moments before he entered.
“Why are you in here?” he asked.
She smiled.
“I was looking for a charger.”

Derek stared at her for several seconds.
Then he smiled back.
