Chapter 9 - The Husband Who Walked Away)

Mark did not leave Claire.

That would have been easier to understand.

Instead, he moved into the guest room.

He still woke with Noah.

Still washed bottles.

Still brought Claire coffee.

Still asked whether she had eaten.

But something invisible had disappeared.

Trust.

Three nights after the office confrontation, Claire stood in the guest room doorway.

"Can we talk?"

Mark looked up from his laptop.

"Sure."

She sat across from him.

"I'm sorry."

He nodded.

"I know."

"That's it?"

"What do you want me to say?"

"I don't know."

Mark closed the laptop.

"Claire, I love you."

Her eyes filled.

"But?"

"But you let me walk into your father's office believing I might be accused of stealing money."

"I was trying to protect Evan."

"I know."

"And Dad."

"I know."

"And you."

Mark laughed quietly.

"Me?"

"Lucas was framing you."

"Which is exactly why you should have told me."

Claire looked down.

"I was scared."

"Of me?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"Everything falling apart."

Mark leaned forward.

"And what happened?"

She closed her eyes.

"Everything fell apart."

"Because secrets don't hold things together."

Claire cried silently.

Mark's anger softened.

He handed her a tissue.

She almost laughed.

"You're still taking care of me while you're furious."

"I'm not furious anymore."

"What are you?"

"Hurt."

That word again.

Claire hated it.

Mark continued.

"I need to know that when something threatens our family, you come to me."

"I will."

"No."

She looked up.

"Don't promise because you're scared I'm leaving."

"Are you?"

Mark stared at her.

"No."

Claire exhaled.

"But I need time."

She nodded.

"I understand."

The next morning Robert came to the house.

Mark answered the door.

Robert looked uncomfortable.

Claire watched from the kitchen.

"I owe you an apology," Robert said.

Mark folded his arms.

"Yes."

Robert almost smiled.

"I suppose I deserved that."

"Probably."

Robert looked at the floor.

"I accused you before I had facts."

"You did."

"I saw money leaving my company. Your company name appeared. Claire was clearly hiding something. I thought..."

He stopped.

"What?"

Robert looked toward his daughter.

"I thought you were controlling her."

Claire stared.

"Why?"

Robert reached into his coat.

He removed a printed photograph.

The kitchen security video.

One frame showed Evan grabbing Claire's wrist.

Except Evan's face was outside the crop.

Only Claire and a man's arm were visible.

Mark understood.

"Lucas sent you this."

Robert nodded.

"Anonymous email."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"When?"

"Yesterday."

Mark looked at the photograph.

"He's building a story."

Robert nodded.

"Against me. Against you. Against all of us."

Mark handed the photograph back.

"Did you get the county report?"

Robert looked grim.

"Missing."

Claire stood.

"What?"

"The archive box was checked out three months ago."

"By whom?"

"Someone using an authorization letter from my attorney."

"Was it real?"

"No."

Mark leaned against the doorway.

"Lucas."

"Probably."

Robert looked at Claire.

"Your mother doesn't know about Samuel."

Claire frowned.

"You said she was involved."

"She knows about the relationship. She knows there was uncertainty about Evan."

"Then what doesn't she know?"

Robert's expression changed.

"The accident."

Evan appeared behind Robert.

Claire had not seen him arrive.

He stepped inside.

"What about it?"

Robert turned.

Evan's face was pale.

"What aren't you telling Mom?"

Robert closed his eyes.

"Samuel came to see me the night before he died."

Lucas had accused Robert of knowingly sending Samuel to dangerous equipment.

Robert's next words changed the story.

"He told me someone was stealing from the company."

Evan stared.

"Who?"

"I never found out."

Robert looked at all of them.

"But Samuel said if anything happened to him, I should look at the maintenance logs."

Mark frowned.

"Did you?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"They disappeared."

Claire felt cold.

Robert continued.

"For twenty-nine years I believed the missing logs were connected to negligence."

"And now?" Mark asked.

Robert looked toward the window.

"Now I think Samuel wasn't killed by an accident."

Nobody spoke.

Robert's voice dropped.

"I think he discovered something someone wanted buried."

Evan whispered, "Lucas?"

Robert shook his head.

"Lucas was twenty-four."

"Old enough."

"Yes."

Claire looked at Mark.

Mark looked back.

For the first time in days, they were thinking the same thing.

The missing money was not the beginning.

May you like

It was a pattern.

And someone had been protecting that pattern for twenty-nine years.
