Chapter 12 - The Flash Drive)

Evan did not run.

Claire would remember that later.

The old Evan would have.

He would have disappeared through the kitchen, invented a story, blamed somebody else.

Instead, he stepped forward.

Robert stared at him.

"What does she mean?"

Evan looked around the room.

Relatives.

Friends.

Board members.

People who had known him since childhood.

He swallowed.

"She's telling the truth."

Robert's hand fell.

Mark stood slowly.

Claire gave Noah to Helen.

Then she walked toward her father.

"The man in the original video was Evan."

Robert stared at the flash drive.

"I thought..."

"I know."

"You were crying."

"Because he was asking me to sign over the lake house."

Robert looked at Evan.

"Why?"

Evan answered.

"To cover money I stole."

Several relatives gasped.

Claire hated the spectacle.

But secrets had already done enough damage.

Mark stepped beside her.

Robert turned to him.

"I..."

Mark shook his head.

"Later."

Then the doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

It rang again.

Mark looked toward the front window.

A black sedan stood outside.

Evan whispered, "Lucas."

Robert's face hardened.

"Why would he come here?"

Claire's phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

OPEN THE DOOR.

Mark read it over her shoulder.

"Police are outside?"

Evan nodded slightly.

Two investigators were stationed down the street.

Mark walked to the entrance.

Claire caught his hand.

"Careful."

He squeezed her fingers.

The gesture was small.

But after weeks of distance, Claire felt it deeply.

Mark opened the door.

Lucas Warren stood outside holding a gift bag.

He smiled.

"Am I late?"

Mark stepped aside.

Lucas entered.

The room was silent.

His smile faded.

"Interesting atmosphere."

Robert held up the flash drive.

"You sent this."

Lucas looked amused.

"I have no idea what that is."

"You sent the photographs."

"No."

"You framed Mark."

"No."

"You used Evan."

Lucas turned to Evan.

"Your son is a thief."

Evan nodded.

"Yes."

Lucas seemed surprised.

Evan continued.

"And so are you."

Lucas laughed.

"Be careful."

"I don't need to be careful anymore."

He took out his phone.

"I gave them everything."

Lucas's face changed.

"Everything?"

"The recordings. Transfers. Messages."

Lucas stared at him.

"You stupid little addict."

Robert moved forward.

Mark blocked him.

"No."

Robert stopped.

Lucas looked around the room.

"You think this family is suddenly honest?"

Claire stared at him.

"No."

He smiled.

"We're trying."

That answer unsettled him more than denial would have.

Lucas turned toward Helen.

"Did you tell them about Samuel?"

Helen stepped forward.

"Yes."

"All of it?"

"Yes."

"Then they know Robert raised another man's son."

Robert's expression became cold.

"I raised my son."

Evan looked at him.

Lucas sneered.

"You don't even know if he's yours."

Robert answered without hesitation.

"That has never mattered."

The room fell quiet.

Evan began crying.

Lucas looked disgusted.

"Touching."

Claire noticed his right hand moving toward his coat.

Mark noticed too.

"Hands where I can see them."

Lucas laughed.

"What are you now, security?"

"Hands."

Lucas removed a folded envelope.

Robert's eyes narrowed.

"The original report."

Lucas smiled.

"Perhaps."

He held it over the fireplace candle.

Claire moved.

"Don't."

Lucas turned.

"One step and twenty-nine years of proof disappears."

Robert said, "Let it burn."

Everyone looked at him.

Lucas frowned.

Robert continued.

"We have Samuel's logs. We have the tape. We have bank records. We have Evan's recordings."

Lucas's hand tightened.

Robert took one step closer.

"You spent thirty years believing that piece of paper owned me."

Lucas looked toward the door.

Two police investigators entered.

The lead investigator spoke calmly.

"Mr. Warren, put the envelope down."

Lucas stared at Evan.

"You did this."

Evan shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Claire.

"She did."

Claire frowned.

Evan smiled sadly.

"She finally stopped protecting me."

Lucas dropped the envelope.

The investigator collected it.

No one applauded.

No one celebrated.

Real consequences were quieter than that.

As Lucas was escorted outside, he looked at Robert.

"Samuel should have kept his mouth shut."

The investigator stopped.

Everyone heard it.

Robert's face changed.

"So you knew."

Lucas realized too late what he had said.

He tried to correct himself.

Nobody listened.

The door closed.

The living room remained silent.

Then Noah began crying.

Claire took him from Helen.

Mark stood beside her.

Robert looked at his son-in-law.

"I'm sorry."

Mark nodded.

"I know."

Robert looked at Evan.

His expression became far more complicated.

"We need to talk."

Evan swallowed.

"Yeah."

But before they could leave the room, the investigator returned.

He held the envelope Lucas had nearly burned.

"We opened this."

Robert stared.

"And?"

The investigator looked at Evan.

"It isn't the accident report."

Evan frowned.

"What is it?"

The investigator handed him a document.

Evan read the first line.

Then his face went completely white.

Claire stepped closer.

"What?"

May you like

Evan looked at Robert.

"It's a DNA report."
