Chapter 7 - What Robert Buried)

Claire photographed every document.

Then she put them back exactly as she had found them.

She left her parents' house with Noah sleeping in his carrier.

In the car, she called Evan.

"Did you know?"

"Know what?"

"Samuel Warren."

Silence.

Claire gripped the steering wheel.

"Evan."

"Where are you?"

"Answer me."

"I knew Lucas had something involving his brother."

"Did you know Samuel might be your biological father?"

Nothing.

Claire closed her eyes.

"You knew."

"Lucas told me."

"When?"

"Six months ago."

Six months.

Before the betting debts.

Before the stolen money.

Before Mark's forged signature.

"That's how he got to you."

Evan began crying quietly.

Claire had never heard him cry as an adult.

"He showed me a photograph."

"Of Samuel?"

"He looked like me."

Claire said nothing.

"He said Dad knew."

"He did."

"What?"

"I found records."

Evan breathed shakily.

"Then it's true?"

"I don't know. There was never a DNA test."

"Lucas said Samuel and Mom were together."

"Maybe."

"He said Dad hated him."

Claire looked at the newspaper clipping photograph on her phone.

Industrial accident.

"Did Lucas say Dad caused Samuel's death?"

Silence.

Claire's stomach turned.

"He did."

"Evan."

"He said Dad covered up a safety failure at the plant."

"Do you believe him?"

"I don't know."

"Then why steal money with him?"

"Because he said he had proof."

"That doesn't answer my question."

"He said Dad destroyed Samuel and then raised me out of guilt."

Claire's anger softened.

For the first time, she understood part of her brother's spiral.

Not excused.

Understood.

Evan had spent his life trying to earn Robert's approval.

Then Lucas told him the man he called Dad might have helped cause his biological father's death.

"What does Lucas want?"

"Control of the company."

Claire went still.

"What?"

"He owns shares through three investment groups."

"How many?"

"Enough that if Dad gets forced out, Lucas can lead a takeover."

The financial theft suddenly made sense.

Lucas was creating chaos inside Robert's company.

Using Evan.

Using Mark.

Using anyone necessary.

"If Dad discovers the missing money, the board orders an audit," Claire said.

"Yes."

"Lucas exposes the old accident."

"Yes."

"Dad gets blamed."

"Yes."

"And Mark gets blamed for the missing money."

Evan whispered, "That was the plan."

Claire closed her eyes.

Not Evan's plan.

Lucas's.

But Evan had participated.

"Where is the evidence?"

"The boathouse."

"Meet me there in one hour."

"Claire."

"One hour."

She ended the call.

The lake house had belonged to Claire's grandmother.

It sat forty minutes outside the city beside dark water and tall pines.

Claire arrived first.

She carried Noah into the house.

Evan came twelve minutes later.

He looked exhausted.

They walked to the boathouse.

Evan removed a loose floorboard.

Beneath it sat a waterproof container.

Inside were printed bank transfers, copies of messages, and a digital recorder.

Claire picked up the recorder.

"What is this?"

"Lucas."

"You recorded him?"

"After I realized he was setting me up."

Claire looked at her brother.

"Maybe you're not completely stupid."

"Thank you."

They almost smiled.

Almost.

Evan inserted a memory card into Claire's laptop.

An audio file opened.

Lucas's voice filled the boathouse.

"You do exactly what I tell you, and your father never learns where the money went."

Evan's voice answered.

"And Mark?"

"He becomes the explanation."

Claire's hand tightened around the laptop.

Lucas continued.

"People believe successful men steal all the time. We show Robert the forged authorizations. We show the board. Mark goes down. Robert loses credibility. You survive."

Evan said, "Claire will know."

Lucas laughed.

"Claire will protect you. She always has."

Claire closed her eyes.

That was the cruelest part.

He was right.

The recording continued.

Then another sentence made both siblings freeze.

"And if Robert fights, I release the original plant report."

Evan asked, "The one about Samuel?"

"Yes."

"You said Robert signed it."

"He did."

Claire paused the recording.

"Do you have the report?"

"No."

"Then Lucas does."

Evan nodded.

Claire packed the evidence.

"We go to Dad."

"Now?"

"Now."

"What about Mark?"

Claire looked at him.

"I tell him first."

As they left the boathouse, Claire's phone rang.

Mark.

She answered.

"Where are you?"

"The lake house."

"Why?"

"I need to tell you everything."

Silence.

Then Mark said, "Too late."

Claire stopped walking.

"What?"

"I'm at your father's office."

Her blood went cold.

May you like

"Why?"

"Because Robert just accused me of stealing one hundred eighty thousand dollars."
