Chapter 11 - The Trap at the Celebration)

The police opened two investigations.
One concerned the recent financial fraud.
The other concerned Samuel Warren's death.
The second moved slowly.
Twenty-nine years erased witnesses.
But money lasted.
Records lasted.
Patterns lasted.
Mark's accountant traced the stolen funds through six shell accounts.
Three connected directly to entities controlled by Lucas Warren.
Evan signed a sworn statement.
He admitted everything.
The gambling.
The forged signatures.
The transfers.
The meetings with Lucas.
Robert listened without interrupting.
When Evan finished, Robert asked one question.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
Evan laughed bitterly.
"Because I've spent my whole life terrified of disappointing you."
Robert's eyes filled.
"You think this is better?"
"No."
"Good."
Then Robert hugged him.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But not abandonment either.
Three weeks passed.
No arrests were made.
Lucas hired attorneys.
He denied everything.
His lawyers described Evan as a desperate gambler attempting to redirect blame.
Then Robert received another anonymous package.
Inside was a photograph of Claire crying in the kitchen after Evan's late-night visit.
The image had been cropped.
A man's shoulder appeared beside her.
Mark's.
Except Mark had been in Chicago when the actual confrontation occurred.
Someone had edited two images together.
Robert stared.
"They're trying to make me believe Mark hurt her."
Claire nodded.
Mark studied the package.
"Why?"
Evan answered.
"To make Robert act publicly."
Everyone looked at him.
"If Dad attacks Mark or accuses him, Lucas gets chaos. Family against family."
Claire felt uneasy.
"The celebration."
Robert frowned.
"What?"
"Noah's one-month celebration is Saturday."
Mark looked at her.
Claire continued.
"Everyone will be there."
Helen whispered, "Including people from the company."
Robert understood.
Lucas wanted scandal.
If Robert publicly accused Mark, Lucas could use it against both businesses.
Mark said, "Cancel the party."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Everyone stared.
"If we cancel, he knows we're scared."
"Claire."
"We know he's watching."
Robert frowned.
"What are you suggesting?"
"A trap."
Mark immediately said, "No."
Claire ignored him.
"Lucas thinks Dad believes Mark is guilty."
Robert slowly understood.
"So we let him think I do."
Evan smiled despite himself.
"That's actually good."
Mark glared.
"No."
Claire looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because your plan probably involves you."
"It does."
"No."
Claire almost smiled.
"Now you know how I felt when you took jobs on unsafe roofs."
"Not funny."
"Noah and I won't be alone."
"Still no."
Robert raised a hand.
"Mark."
"No."
Robert stopped.
Claire walked closer to her husband.
"We need Lucas to expose what evidence he has."
"And you think he'll do that at a party?"
"I think he'll contact Dad when he believes Dad is angry enough."
Evan nodded.
"He'll push him."
Robert looked thoughtful.
Mark looked furious.
Claire touched his arm.
"I'm done hiding."
His expression softened slightly.
"This is not about trust."
"It is for me."
She lowered her voice.
"I spent my whole life thinking protecting family meant keeping secrets. I need to do this differently."
Mark studied her.
Finally, he sighed.
"What exactly happens?"
The plan was simple.
Which meant it immediately became complicated.
Robert would behave coldly toward Mark in public.
Claire would appear nervous.
Evan would remain at the celebration despite pretending his relationship with Robert had collapsed.
Police investigators would be nearby but not visible.
The hope was that Lucas would send something incriminating or appear.
Saturday arrived.
The house filled with relatives.
White balloons.
Cake.
Music.
Noah passed from grandmother to aunt to cousin.
For one hour, nothing happened.
Then Robert's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph.
The manipulated image of Claire and Mark.
Message:
HE DID IT AGAIN.
Robert's jaw tightened.
Another message arrived.
ASK CLAIRE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MARK TRAVELS.
Claire saw her father reading.
She approached.
"Dad?"
Robert looked toward Mark.
This was part of the plan.
But then a third image arrived.
Claire bleeding from the corner of her mouth.
She stared.
"What is that?"
The photograph was real.
It had been taken months earlier after Claire slipped in the bathroom during pregnancy.
Mark had driven her to urgent care.
Lucas had access to old insurance documentation through the company health system.
Robert knew the explanation.
But emotion ignored logic.
Then the message:
YOUR DAUGHTER WILL NEVER TELL YOU THE TRUTH WHILE HE IS IN THE ROOM.
Robert looked at Mark.
Claire saw something change.
Not acting.
Real anger.
"Dad."
He walked toward Mark.
"Robert."
Mark turned.
Robert grabbed his collar.
And suddenly the trap became something else.
Glass shattered.
Relatives screamed.
Mark was shoved into a chair.
"Have you lost your mind?"
Robert shouted:
"I know everything."
Claire's blood turned cold.
This was no longer the plan.
"Dad, stop."
Robert pointed at her.
"Tell him."
"Dad."
"Tell him how long you're going to keep hiding it."
Mark stared at Claire.
She realized Robert had misunderstood the strategy.
He believed she was still protecting someone.
But not Mark.
Evan stood near the kitchen doorway.
Robert pulled the black flash drive from his pocket.
Then Claire finally said:
"It wasn't Mark, Dad."
May you like
Every head turned toward Evan.
"It was Evan."
