Chapter 8 - The Accusation)

Claire drove faster than she should have.
Evan followed in his car.
When they reached Hayes Development Group, Mark's truck was parked outside.
Robert's office door was closed.
Voices carried into the hallway.
Claire entered without knocking.
Robert stood behind his desk.
Mark stood near the windows.
Lucas Warren sat calmly in a leather chair.
Claire stopped.
Lucas smiled.
"Claire."
She looked at Mark.
His face was unreadable.
Robert pointed to documents on the desk.
"Did you know about these?"
Claire glanced at them.
Transfers.
Forged authorizations.
Mark's false signature.
"Yes."
Mark turned toward her.
The single word struck harder than shouting.
Robert stared.
"You knew?"
Claire put Noah's carrier on a chair.
"Not everything."
"When?"
"About two weeks ago."
Robert's face reddened.
"Two weeks?"
"Dad, listen."
"Do you understand what those documents show?"
"They're fake."
Lucas shifted slightly.
Claire saw it.
"Mark didn't sign them."
Robert looked at Mark.
Mark said nothing.
Claire continued.
"Evan did."
Robert stopped.
The office door opened.
Evan entered.
Robert stared at his son.
"What did she say?"
Evan stepped forward.
"She's telling the truth."
Lucas stood.
"This is ridiculous."
Claire turned on him.
"Sit down."
Lucas actually laughed.
Robert looked between them.
"What is happening?"
Claire placed the waterproof container on the desk.
"Everything you should have been told weeks ago."
Mark's eyes remained on her.
Claire felt his disappointment like heat.
She forced herself to continue.
"Evan had gambling debts. Lucas discovered them. He helped Evan move money from Hayes Development through accounts made to look connected to Mark's business."
Robert looked at Lucas.
"Is that true?"
"Of course not."
Evan pulled out his phone.
"I have recordings."
Lucas's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Robert noticed.
Claire played the audio.
Lucas's voice filled the office.
Mark becomes the explanation.
Robert's face slowly changed.
Lucas moved toward the door.
Mark stepped in front of him.
"Stay."
Lucas glared.
"You can't keep me here."
"No," Mark said. "But I can make sure Robert hears the rest before you leave."
The recording reached the reference to Samuel.
Robert's face drained of color.
Helen had once told Claire that her father became quiet when he was truly afraid.
Claire saw it now.
Robert whispered, "Turn that off."
Claire stopped the audio.
Evan stared at him.
"Who was Samuel Warren?"
Robert sat down.
Lucas smiled bitterly.
"Go ahead, Robert."
Claire looked at Lucas.
"Don't."
"This family loves secrets."
Robert looked at Evan.
His son.
Maybe biologically Samuel's son.
Maybe not.
But his son.
"Samuel worked with me," Robert said.
Lucas laughed.
"That's all?"
"Lucas."
"No. Tell them."
Robert closed his eyes.
"Samuel and your mother had a relationship before she married me."
Evan stared.
"Before?"
"It ended before our wedding."
"Was he my father?"
Robert's voice broke.
"I don't know."
Evan stepped backward.
Claire reached for him.
He moved away.
Robert continued.
"Helen was pregnant when we learned there was a possibility."
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"And you stayed?"
Robert looked confused.
"Of course I stayed."
Evan's eyes filled.
"Why?"
Robert stood.
"Because you were my son."
The room became silent.
Evan looked away.
Lucas spoke.
"Beautiful."
Claire turned.
Lucas's smile was cold.
"Now tell him how Samuel died."
Robert's shoulders tightened.
"There was an accident at our first manufacturing site."
"You signed a safety report."
"Yes."
"You knew equipment was defective."
Robert shook his head.
"No."
Lucas reached into his briefcase.
Claire watched carefully.
He removed a photocopy.
"My brother died because Robert Hayes refused to shut down production."
Robert took the paper.
His hands began shaking.
"This isn't the original."
"No."
"This isn't even my signature."
Lucas laughed.
"You expect them to believe that?"
Robert looked at Claire.
"That report is false."
Claire wanted to believe him.
But two weeks earlier she would have said Evan could never steal half a million dollars.
Now certainty felt dangerous.
Mark finally spoke.
"Where is the original accident report?"
Robert answered immediately.
"County archive."
Lucas's smile disappeared.
Mark noticed.
"So we get it."
Lucas gathered his briefcase.
"This has nothing to do with me."
Evan laughed bitterly.
"You stole two hundred eighty thousand dollars."
"You stole it."
"I recorded you."
"Recordings can be edited."
Mark stepped closer.
"But bank logs are harder."
Lucas's eyes shifted.
Mark continued.
"I spent this morning with my accountant."
Claire looked at him.
Mark had not simply defended himself.
He had investigated.
"The temporary account was created from an IP address assigned to this building," Mark said.
Robert looked at Lucas.
"Which office?"
Mark answered.
"Finance."
Lucas walked toward the door.
This time nobody stopped him.
Before leaving, he turned to Robert.
"You think this ends with bank records?"
Robert stared.
Lucas smiled.
"The celebration is next month, isn't it?"
Claire frowned.
Lucas looked directly at her.
"You should enjoy it."
Then he left.
Robert collapsed into his chair.
Evan stood across from him.
Neither spoke.
Mark picked up Noah's carrier.
Claire approached him.
"Mark."
He looked at her.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
"Today."
"No."
His voice was calm.
"When were you going to tell me if Robert hadn't confronted me?"
Claire had no answer.
Mark nodded.
"That's what I thought."
May you like
He carried their son out of the office.
And Claire realized exposing the truth did not automatically repair the damage caused by hiding it.
