Chapter 5 - The Second Name)

Claire did not sleep that night.
She stared at the ceiling while Mark breathed beside her.
At 4:12 a.m., she got out of bed.
She opened the kitchen video again.
She listened.
If Mark finds out about the transfer, we're both finished.
Who was on the other end?
At sunrise, Claire called Evan.
"Come over."
"I can't."
"You have ten minutes."
"What happened?"
"I have the video."
Silence.
Then the call ended.
Evan arrived seventeen minutes later.
Claire met him on the porch.
She did not let him inside.
"Who were you talking to?"
His face changed.
"I don't know what you mean."
Claire played the clip.
Evan listened.
His shoulders sagged.
"Where did you get that?"
"Who?"
"No one."
"You said both."
"I meant you and me."
"No, you didn't."
He looked toward the driveway.
Claire stepped in front of him.
"Who helped you?"
"No one."
"You don't know enough about Mark's company to create a transfer account."
Evan said nothing.
"You don't know his bank routing structure."
Nothing.
"You don't know Dad's approval procedures."
Evan looked at her.
Claire understood.
Somebody who knew both companies.
"Who?"
Evan whispered, "Lucas."
Claire's stomach dropped.
Lucas Warren had worked for Robert for eleven years.
He was Hayes Development Group's financial controller.
He had been at Claire's wedding.
He had visited her in the hospital after Noah was born.
He called Robert his mentor.
"Why?"
"Because he had access."
"You involved Dad's controller?"
"He involved me."
Claire stared.
"What does that mean?"
Evan sat on the porch step.
For the first time, he looked broken.
"It started with sports betting."
Claire said nothing.
"I owed twenty-eight thousand. Lucas knew somebody who could cover it. Then the debt doubled. Then I borrowed from another account."
"You stole."
"Yes."
It was the first honest word he had spoken.
Evan continued.
"Lucas found out. He said he could help me replace it before Dad noticed."
"So he stole more?"
"He moved money through vendor accounts."
"Using Mark."
"Mark's company had legitimate transactions with Dad. It was easy to hide."
Claire felt nauseated.
"How much total?"
Evan stared at the ground.
"Four hundred sixty thousand."
Claire gripped the porch railing.
"You told me one eighty."
"That was my part."
"Your part?"
"Lucas took the rest."
She closed her eyes.
"Why did he send me the video?"
Evan looked up.
"He did?"
"Someone did."
"Then he's scared."
"Of what?"
"Me."
Claire laughed once.
"You?"
"I kept copies."
"Of what?"
"Transfers. Messages. Everything."
"Where?"
Evan hesitated.
Claire saw the answer before he spoke.
"The lake house."
She stared.
"You hid evidence in Mom's house?"
"Not the house. The boathouse."
Claire wanted to hit him.
Instead, she whispered, "You are going to Dad today."
"No."
"Yes."
"Claire, Lucas will destroy me."
"You did that yourself."
"He'll make it look like I did everything."
"Then show Dad the copies."
"You don't understand."
"What?"
Evan looked toward the front window.
"Lucas has something on Dad."
Claire's anger stalled.
"What?"
"I don't know exactly."
"He told you?"
"He said if I confessed, he'd send information to the board that would force Dad out."
Claire's mind raced.
"Could he be bluffing?"
"Maybe."
"Then let him."
"You know Dad."
Claire did.
Robert Hayes had built his company over thirty-six years.
It was not simply his work.
It was his identity.
Losing it would crush him.
Claire hated that this mattered.
But it did.
"What are you asking me to do?"
"Give me one week."
She stared at him.
"You already got one week."
"I can get the evidence."
"Then what?"
"We go to Dad together."
Claire looked through the window.
Mark stood upstairs holding Noah.
He was rocking him gently.
Her husband.
Her son.
The life she was risking every time she protected Evan.
"Three days," Claire said.
Evan nodded.
"Three."
"If you disappear, I tell Mark everything."
"I won't."
"And Evan?"
He looked at her.
"If anyone enters my house again without permission, I call the police before I call family."
He nodded.
Claire watched him leave.
She thought she had finally set a boundary.
But later that afternoon, Mark walked into the kitchen carrying an envelope.
"This came for you."
Claire looked at the return address.
There was none.
Inside was a photograph.
Mark saw it before she could hide it.
It showed Claire standing on the porch with Evan that morning.
On the back, one sentence had been written.
ASK YOUR WIFE WHAT SHE IS PROTECTING.
Mark raised his eyes.
"Claire."
She stopped breathing.
May you like
He placed the photograph on the table.
"Now you're going to tell me the truth."
