Chapter 9 - Vanessa's Insurance

The attorney's name was Rachel Monroe.

She had practiced family law for sixteen years and did not waste time pretending anything about the situation was normal.

She sat across from Daniel, Laura and Ethan the following morning.

Noah slept in a carrier beside Laura.

Rachel reviewed Ethan's evidence.

Then the cloud footage.

Then Daniel's written account.

Finally she looked at Daniel.

"Did you ever physically harm Vanessa?"

"No."

"Threaten her?"

"No."

"Break objects during arguments?"

Daniel hesitated.

Rachel noticed.

"What?"

"Years ago I punched a garage wall."

"When?"

"Before Vanessa."

"Any police reports?"

"No."

"Any domestic violence allegations?"

"No."

Rachel nodded.

"Good."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What happens now?"

"We file today."

"For Noah?"

"And potentially restrictions regarding Ethan."

Laura frowned.

"Vanessa isn't Ethan's legal guardian."

"Correct. But we establish a record."

Rachel looked at Ethan.

"You've done an unusually good job documenting this."

Ethan did not look proud.

He looked tired.

Rachel softened.

"You shouldn't have had to."

Daniel glanced down.

The words landed.

Before anyone continued, Daniel's phone buzzed.

Vanessa.

He ignored it.

Again.

Again.

Rachel said, "Answer on speaker."

Daniel did.

"Hello."

Vanessa was crying.

"Daniel, please."

Nobody spoke.

"I know you're angry."

Daniel looked at Rachel.

She nodded for him to continue.

"Where are you?"

"Home."

"What do you want?"

"My baby."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"No."

"He's three weeks old."

"I know."

"You can't take him from his mother."

"I can keep him safe."

Silence.

Then Vanessa's tone changed.

"So that's what Ethan told you?"

Daniel said nothing.

She laughed softly.

"Did he show you everything?"

Ethan looked up.

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa stopped crying.

"I have video too."

Rachel immediately began writing.

Daniel said, "Of what?"

"You."

"When?"

"The night we brought Noah home."

Daniel remembered.

He had been exhausted.

Noah had screamed for three hours.

Vanessa had accused Daniel of abandoning her when he suggested calling a nurse.

They had argued.

"What video?"

"You screaming at me."

Daniel's face tightened.

Vanessa continued.

"You grabbed my arm."

"No."

"You did."

"I moved you away from the staircase because you were holding Noah while shouting."

"That's not how the video looks."

Rachel wrote faster.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa's voice turned cold.

"If you try to take my son, I'll make sure everyone sees it."

Daniel understood.

Insurance.

Vanessa had been recording too.

Rachel signaled.

Daniel said, "Send it."

Vanessa laughed.

"I'll send it to whoever matters."

The call ended.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

"Tell me exactly what happened."

He did.

The argument.

Vanessa pacing near the stairs with Noah.

Daniel reaching for the baby.

Vanessa refusing.

Daniel taking her arm and guiding her away.

"Did you hurt her?"

"No."

"Did she say you hurt her?"

"She said, 'Get off me.'"

Rachel nodded.

"Context matters."

Ethan stared at Daniel.

"She set you up."

Daniel looked at him.

"Maybe."

Laura frowned.

"How long has she been planning this?"

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel asked Ethan something unexpected.

"Did Vanessa ever talk about money?"

"All the time."

"What kind?"

"House. Company. Noah's trust."

Daniel looked up.

"What trust?"

Ethan frowned.

"She told somebody on the phone that Noah's trust would make everything easier."

Daniel's pulse changed.

"There is no trust."

Rachel stared.

"Are you sure?"

"I have a college account planned. Nothing else."

Ethan opened his laptop.

"I wrote it down."

He searched.

March 14. Vanessa on phone in kitchen. Said: Once Noah's trust is active, Daniel won't be able to control anything.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

"Who handles your estate planning?"

"My attorney, Martin Hale."

"Hale?"

Daniel nodded.

"Any relation to Vanessa?"

"No."

Then he stopped.

Vanessa's maiden name was Hale.

Rachel saw it.

"Daniel?"

He stood.

"Martin is her uncle."

Laura stared.

"You used her uncle as your estate attorney?"

"He handled my company before I met Vanessa. That's how I met her."

Rachel's expression sharpened.

"Get every estate document you signed in the last eighteen months."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"There was an amendment after Noah was born."

"What amendment?"

"Guardianship. Insurance. Normal things."

"Did you read it?"

Daniel did not answer quickly enough.

Rachel exhaled.

"Daniel."

"I trusted him."

The room went silent.

Ethan leaned back.

For months he had thought Vanessa wanted him gone because she hated him.

Now a more frightening possibility appeared.

May you like

Maybe Ethan was not simply an unwanted stepson.

Maybe he was standing between Vanessa and something she had planned long before Noah was born.
