Chapter 8 - Daniel Finally Listens

They met at Daniel's office.
Laura brought Ethan.
Vanessa did not know.
Daniel locked the conference room door.
He placed the nursery clips on the large screen.
Ethan watched silently.
When the final clip ended, Daniel turned.
"Why didn't you show me this?"
Ethan laughed once.
"I tried to tell you."
Daniel looked down.
"You're right."
The words were simple.
They were also months late.
Ethan looked at him.
Daniel continued.
"I failed you."
Laura crossed her arms.
Ethan said nothing.
Daniel struggled.
"I thought I was keeping peace."
"You were keeping her comfortable," Ethan said.
Daniel nodded.
"Yeah."
It hurt to admit.
But he did.
"I was."
Ethan's eyes filled.
"She hit me."
"I know."
"No, you don't."
Daniel looked at him.
Ethan pulled up the secret account.
He opened every entry.
Every photograph.
Every note.
Every date.
Daniel read.
The bruise on the ribs.
The diluted formula.
The missing camera.
The locked nursery.
The fan.
With each entry, his face changed.
By the end, he looked physically sick.
"Why didn't you call me in Boise?"
"Because I knew what you'd say."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"What would I say?"
"That she's tired. That I'm fourteen. That we need to make things easier."
Daniel remembered every sentence.
He wanted to defend himself.
He did not.
Ethan deserved something rarer than explanations.
He deserved accountability.
"I believe you."
Ethan stared at him.
Daniel repeated it.
"I believe you."
The boy looked away.
Laura touched his shoulder.
Daniel continued.
"And you're not going back to that house while Vanessa is there."
Ethan immediately looked up.
"What about Noah?"
Daniel nodded.
"I'm bringing him to you."
"Now?"
"Yes."
Laura frowned.
"Daniel, don't confront her alone."
"I won't."
"You need a plan."
He looked at Ethan's evidence.
"I have one."
The plan was simple.
Daniel would return home.
He would tell Vanessa that Laura had decided to take Ethan back to Seattle.
He would pretend to accept Vanessa's version of events.
Then, when she relaxed, Daniel would take Noah to a pediatric appointment and not return.
Laura would contact an attorney.
Daniel would file for emergency temporary custody.
The cloud footage and Ethan's documentation would support the petition.
It should have worked.
But Vanessa had already realized something had changed.
When Daniel returned home, she was waiting in the kitchen.
"Where were you?"
"Office."
"For three hours?"
"Meeting."
She studied him.
"With who?"
"Clients."
Vanessa smiled.
"Laura?"
Daniel kept his face neutral.
"No."
She watched him for another second.
Then Noah cried upstairs.
Vanessa did not move.
Daniel did.
"I'll get him."
She blocked his path.
"I've got it."
"Vanessa."
"You're tired."
"So are you."
"I said I've got him."
Daniel stared.
They stood in silence.
Then he smiled.
"Fine."
Vanessa went upstairs.
Daniel listened.
The nursery door closed.
A lock clicked.
His blood ran cold.
He followed.
The door opened before he reached it.
Vanessa emerged carrying Noah.
"He's fine."
Daniel held out his arms.
"I'll take him."
She did not move.
"Why?"
"Because he's my son."
"He's my son too."
Something had shifted.
Both knew it.
Daniel forced himself to relax.
"Vanessa, come on."
She handed Noah over.
Daniel kissed the baby's forehead.
The infant felt warm.
Too warm.
"When did he eat?"
Vanessa stared.
"What?"
"When did Noah eat?"
"How much?"
Her expression hardened.
"You've never asked me that before."
Daniel looked at her.
She was right.
That fact shamed him.
"I should have."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"What did Ethan tell you?"
Daniel did not answer.
"What did he show you?"
Nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"You met with him."
Daniel held Noah tighter.
"We're done."
For several seconds Vanessa looked completely calm.
Then she laughed.
"No."
Daniel turned toward the stairs.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
"You don't get to decide that."
"Let go."
"After everything I gave you?"
"Let go."
She did.
Daniel walked downstairs.
Vanessa followed.
"Where are you taking him?"
"Pediatrician."
"No."
Daniel stopped.
"What?"
"Noah stays with me."
Daniel turned.
"Get out of my way."
Vanessa stared.
Then she stepped aside.
Daniel drove to Laura's apartment with Noah.
He expected Vanessa to call.
She did not.
That silence should have warned him.
Because while Daniel held both sons for the first time in days, Vanessa stood alone in the nursery.
She opened the closet.
Inside was a second memory card.
May you like
One Daniel did not know existed.
And on it was footage Vanessa believed could destroy him.
