Chapter 10 - The Document in the Safe

Daniel's company safe was located behind a cabinet in his home office.
He returned to the house with Rachel.
Laura kept Ethan and Noah at the apartment.
Vanessa was gone.
Her car was missing.
The silence inside the house felt unnatural.
Daniel opened the safe.
Contracts.
Passports.
Insurance records.
A sealed envelope from Martin Hale.
Rachel removed it.
Inside was the estate amendment Daniel had signed six weeks before Noah's birth.
He remembered Martin explaining it quickly.
Standard protective structure.
Guardianship provisions.
Temporary voting authority in the company if Daniel became incapacitated.
Daniel had signed where indicated.
Rachel read slowly.
Then again.
"This is not standard."
Daniel felt cold.
"What?"
"If you die while Noah is a minor, Vanessa receives controlling authority over the family trust."
"That's normal for a spouse."
"Not this part."
Rachel pointed.
"She also receives temporary voting control over your company interests."
Daniel frowned.
"Until Noah turns eighteen?"
"No."
Rachel looked at him.
"Potentially indefinitely, depending on trustee discretion."
"Who is trustee?"
Rachel turned the page.
Martin Hale.
Daniel stared.
Rachel kept reading.
"And if Vanessa is deemed unable to serve as Noah's guardian, the successor guardian is Beatrice Hale."
"Her mother."
"Correct."
Daniel sat down.
"What about Ethan?"
Rachel looked at the document.
"Your older son receives a fixed inheritance."
"How much?"
Her expression answered before she spoke.
"Two hundred thousand dollars."
Daniel stood abruptly.
"My estate is worth more than twelve million."
"I know."
"Ethan was supposed to receive half."
"Not under this document."
Daniel gripped the desk.
"I never agreed to that."
"You signed it."
"I didn't read that."
Rachel's voice stayed calm.
"Then we determine whether there was fraud."
Daniel looked around the office.
Everything suddenly appeared staged.
The home.
The marriage.
The baby.
The documents.
"Where's Vanessa?"
Rachel turned toward the window.
"I don't know."
Then they heard a noise upstairs.
Daniel froze.
Rachel raised a hand.
"Stay here."
"It's my house."
"Exactly why you should not create another confrontation."
Daniel ignored her.
They climbed the stairs.
No one in the nursery.
No one in the bedroom.
Then Daniel saw the attic door open.
He moved closer.
"Vanessa?"
No answer.
Rachel whispered, "Call police."
Before Daniel could, someone stepped from the attic.
Martin Hale.
He was sixty-one, silver-haired and usually immaculate.
Now he wore jeans and a rain jacket.
Daniel stared.
"What are you doing here?"
Martin looked at Rachel.
Then at the papers in her hand.
"I can explain."
Daniel laughed.
"Good."
Rachel spoke before he could move.
"Nobody touches anybody."
Martin raised both hands.
"I came for documents."
"Which documents?" Rachel asked.
"Family documents."
"In Daniel's attic?"
Martin sighed.
"Vanessa called me."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You changed my estate."
Martin shook his head.
"You signed an amendment."
"You told me it protected both boys."
"It protects the family."
"My family includes Ethan."
Martin's expression hardened.
"Ethan is Laura's son."
Daniel stared.
There it was.
The same language.
Not ours.
Not really.
Different.
Rachel asked, "Why does Vanessa control the company?"
Martin looked at her.
"Temporary stability."
"For whose benefit?"
Martin said nothing.
Daniel moved closer.
"Did Vanessa plan this?"
"No."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Then why is my fourteen-year-old son almost disinherited?"
Martin's silence answered too much.
Rachel pulled out her phone.
"I think this conversation should continue with counsel present."
Martin laughed.
"You already are counsel."
"For Daniel."
Martin's face changed.
"You have no authority here."
"I have enough to tell you not to remove a single document."
Daniel pointed toward the attic.
"What were you taking?"
Martin did not answer.
Daniel climbed past him.
Inside the attic sat a black storage case.
He opened it.
Memory cards.
A camera.
Printed emails.
Photographs of Daniel.
Photographs of Ethan.
Logs of his work travel.
A folder labeled custody.
Daniel lifted it.
Inside were notes describing Ethan as emotionally unstable.
Jealous.
Aggressive.
Obsessed with Noah.
Some entries were dated before Noah was born.
Daniel read one.
If Daniel resists restructuring guardianship, establish pattern of instability involving Ethan.
His knees nearly gave out.
Rachel read over his shoulder.
"This is planning."
Daniel looked at Martin.
"How long?"
Martin said nothing.
"How long have you been building this?"
Martin's expression finally cracked.
"Vanessa was trying to protect her child."
"From my son?"
"From uncertainty."
Daniel held up the folder.
"You were creating uncertainty."
Martin looked toward the stairs.
Daniel followed his gaze.
Vanessa stood at the bottom.
May you like
She was holding Noah's empty infant carrier.
And she was smiling.
