Chapter 11 - The Night Noah Disappeared

Everything happened quickly after that.

Police arrived.

Martin refused to answer questions.

Vanessa claimed the attic materials belonged to him.

Martin claimed they were Vanessa's.

Rachel photographed everything before officers collected the case.

Daniel expected Vanessa to be removed from the house.

Instead she left voluntarily.

For two days, nothing happened.

Daniel stayed with Ethan and Noah at Laura's apartment.

The emergency custody filing moved forward.

Martin hired his own lawyer.

Vanessa hired one too.

Then, on Friday morning, Daniel received temporary physical custody of Noah pending a hearing.

For the first time in weeks, he breathed.

That evening the four of them ate pizza on Laura's floor.

No expensive dining table.

No polished silverware.

No tension.

No Vanessa.

No rules.

Noah slept against Daniel's chest.

Ethan ate three slices.

Laura looked at him.

"When was the last time you ate like that?"

Ethan shrugged.

Daniel heard the question.

He pretended he did not.

He was discovering how many things shame made difficult to face.

At midnight, Noah woke.

Daniel changed him.

At two, he fed him.

At four, Noah cried again.

Daniel barely slept.

And he loved every exhausted second.

At six thirty, someone knocked.

Laura looked through the peephole.

"It's Rachel."

She opened the door.

Rachel entered, pale.

"We have a problem."

Daniel stood.

"What?"

"Vanessa filed evidence."

"What evidence?"

"The video she mentioned."

Rachel placed a tablet on the table.

The clip showed Daniel during the argument after Noah came home from the hospital.

Vanessa held the baby.

Daniel shouted.

He reached for her arm.

The angle made the movement look violent.

Then the clip ended.

Ethan stared.

"That's edited."

Rachel nodded.

"I think so."

Daniel leaned closer.

"The argument lasted fifteen minutes."

"This clip is thirty-seven seconds."

"Can we prove it?"

"Maybe."

Laura frowned.

"Why does this matter if Ethan has evidence?"

"Because Vanessa's attorneys are arguing Daniel is dangerous and Ethan is copying his behavior."

Daniel sat down.

"They're turning us into the threat."

"Yes."

Rachel continued.

"They're requesting supervised custody until the hearing."

Ethan looked at Noah.

"No."

Daniel put a hand on his shoulder.

"We fight it."

The hearing was moved to Monday.

They spent the weekend preparing.

Sunday night, Laura finally convinced Daniel to sleep.

She took Noah into the living room.

Ethan stayed awake on the couch with her.

At 1:13 a.m., the building's fire alarm began screaming.

Everyone woke.

People poured into the hallway.

Smoke drifted upward from the first floor.

Laura grabbed her coat.

Daniel carried Noah.

Ethan followed.

Outside, fire crews arrived.

Residents gathered across the street.

A kitchen fire in another apartment.

No major damage.

No injuries.

Confusion everywhere.

Daniel held Noah beneath his coat.

Then Rachel called.

He stepped away to answer.

Thirty seconds.

Maybe forty.

When he turned back, Laura was shouting.

"Ethan?"

Daniel's blood froze.

Ethan stood beside her.

Noah was gone.

Daniel looked down at his empty arms.

He remembered someone brushing against him.

A woman in a dark coat.

A hood.

He had assumed she was another resident.

"Where's Noah?"

Laura's face went white.

"You had him."

Daniel ran toward the building entrance.

Ethan grabbed his arm.

"Dad."

On the sidewalk lay Noah's blanket.

The thin white patterned one.

Daniel picked it up.

Across the street, a dark SUV pulled away from the curb.

Ethan stared.

"I know that car."

Daniel looked at him.

"Whose?"

May you like

Ethan's voice broke.

"Vanessa's."
