Chapter 9 - The Price of Betrayal
Richard’s trial began eight months later.
By then, Clara had given birth to a daughter named Elena Grace.
Clara did not attend every day of the trial. She refused to allow Richard’s downfall to become the center of her daughter’s life.
But she testified.
Richard watched from the defense table as Clara described the false vendors, forged documents, stolen money, and plan to declare her mentally unfit.
His attorney attempted to portray her as a bitter wife seeking revenge.
Clara answered every question calmly.
Then the prosecutor played the recording from the night before the runway.
“No one will believe you. By tomorrow, the board will have medical records proving you’re unstable.”
The courtroom fell silent.
Richard lowered his head.
The jury convicted him of wire fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, theft, and identity fraud.
He received a lengthy federal sentence.
Sabrina received a reduced sentence because of her cooperation. Before sentencing, she sent Clara a letter apologizing for the affair, the fraud, and her role in attempting to steal Clara’s shares.
She explained that Richard had convinced her they were building a future together.
Clara did not answer.
She had learned that forgiveness did not require renewed access.
Thomas Hale visited his granddaughter but never defended his son again. He sold part of his personal holdings to repay losses not covered by the recovered assets.
The company removed Richard’s portrait from the executive floor.
In its place, the board installed a brass plaque honoring Elena Hale for having “the courage to preserve truth before power.”
Clara stood before it with her daughter in her arms.
For years, she believed Elena had left her the shares as a gesture of affection.
