Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Reckoning
The emergency board meeting lasted nine hours.
Richard was suspended within the first twenty minutes.
By noon, Hale Aeronautics had notified federal authorities and frozen every account connected to Meridian. By evening, investigators had executed search warrants at the company’s executive offices and Sabrina’s home.
Richard claimed Clara had stolen confidential documents.
That argument collapsed when Daniel produced Elena’s authorization granting Clara access to the archived investigation.
Richard claimed the recordings had been manipulated.
Independent experts verified them.
He described the forged signature as an administrative mistake.
Metadata showed that Clara’s signature had been copied from an old tax document and inserted by a consultant paid through Meridian.
Sabrina broke first.
Facing conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction charges, she agreed to cooperate.
She provided messages Richard had deleted, access to offshore accounts, and a recording in which he discussed blaming the entire scheme on her if they were caught.
Richard had promised to choose Sabrina.
In reality, he had prepared to sacrifice her.
Within three days, Richard was removed as chief executive.
Within one week, he was indicted.
The company’s share price fell, but not as far as expected. Clara’s decision to alert the board before the scandal became public prevented Richard from moving the remaining funds or destroying active government contracts.
Thousands of employees kept their jobs.
That mattered more to Clara than revenge.
She returned to Washington for one final board meeting.
Richard’s father, Thomas Hale, sat across from her looking twenty years older.
“I owe you an apology,” he said.
“You owe the employees honesty.”
He lowered his eyes.
“The board wants you to serve as interim chair.”
Clara almost laughed.
“I’m six months pregnant and rebuilding my life.”
“You are also the reason this company still has one.”
Clara looked at Elena’s empty chair near the window.
Then she agreed on one condition.
