Chapter 2 - The Second Phone

Clara did not turn on the device immediately.
She sat in the guest room, staring at the black screen while rain tapped softly against the windows. Her first instinct was to return it. Her second was to call Richard and demand the truth.
The woman she had been eight years earlier might have done that.
The woman Clara had become understood that confronting a guilty person only gave them time to hide the evidence.
She connected the phone to an old laptop that had never touched the home network.
The device required a six-digit code.
Richard used important dates for everything. Their wedding anniversary failed. His birthday failed. The day he became chief executive failed.
Then Clara entered the date his father had transferred voting control of Hale Aeronautics to him.
The phone opened.
Hundreds of messages filled the screen.
Most were between Richard and Sabrina Voss, the company’s director of communications.
Clara knew Sabrina well. She had attended family dinners, sent flowers after Clara announced her pregnancy, and once called Clara the sister she had never had.
The messages revealed an affair lasting nearly two years.
But the betrayal did not end there.
Sabrina was also pregnant.
She and Richard discussed Meridian invoices, Project Northstar procurement approvals, offshore accounts, and a plan to force two board members into retirement.
They also discussed Clara’s voting shares.
Years earlier, Richard’s mother, Elena, had left Clara twelve percent of Hale Aeronautics. Richard had recently encouraged Clara to transfer those shares into a family holding company that he controlled.
Sabrina had written:
Once she signs, you can divorce her without risking control.
Richard had replied:
She trusts me. It will be done before the baby arrives.
Clara pressed one hand over her mouth.
She wanted to cry, but her professional instincts took control before grief could overwhelm her.
She photographed every message.
Then she discovered an audio file recorded three nights earlier.
Richard’s voice came through the laptop speakers.
“If Northstar is audited, Meridian takes the fall. No one connects it to us.”
Sabrina laughed softly.
“And Clara?”
“She signs, she leaves, and everyone believes she had a breakdown.”
Clara closed her eyes.

The anonymous message had not warned her about an affair.
It had warned her about a crime.
