Chapter 5 - The Signature Trap
Richard presented the trust documents on a Thursday evening.
He poured sparkling water into Clara’s glass, lit candles, and ordered dinner from her favorite restaurant.
It was almost romantic.
Almost.
“I want to make everything easier before the baby comes,” he said.
He placed a folder beside her plate.
The documents would transfer Clara’s voting rights into a holding company controlled by Richard.
He smiled warmly.
“It’s only temporary.”
Clara turned the pages slowly.
“You already signed part of this for me.”
Richard’s smile shifted.
“The attorneys prepared a draft.”
“That looks like my signature.”
He reached for the folder.
“Clara, you’re tired.”
She looked up at him.
There it was again.
The gentle dismissal.
The practiced concern.
The implication that her own mind could not be trusted.
She smiled back.
“You’re right. I am tired. Let me review everything tomorrow.”
His eyes narrowed for less than a second.
Then he kissed her forehead.
“Of course.”
That night, Clara added the documents to the evidence package.
Naomi arranged secure delivery to the board, federal investigators, and the company’s outside counsel. Daniel prepared an emergency petition blocking any transfer of Clara’s shares.
But Clara wanted one more thing.
Proof that Richard intended to frame her.
She gave him what appeared to be an opportunity.
The next morning, Clara mentioned to Sabrina that pregnancy anxiety had caused her to experience memory problems. She knew Sabrina would repeat it to Richard.
That night, Richard encouraged Clara to sign a medical release.
“It will help if we need to explain things to the board,” he said.
“Explain what?”
“Nothing serious. I’m protecting you.”
The release named a psychiatrist Clara had never met.
Naomi later discovered that the doctor had received payments through Meridian.
Richard’s plan became clear.
He would declare Clara mentally unstable, challenge her legal capacity, seize her voting shares, and discredit any accusations she made.
The trap had closed.
