Chapter 3 - The Quiet Investigation

The next morning, Clara kissed Richard goodbye.

It was the most difficult performance of her life.

“You look pale,” he said.

“I didn’t sleep well.”

“You worry too much.”

He touched her shoulder without affection and left.

Clara waited until his sedan disappeared before calling the only person she trusted with something this dangerous.

Naomi Reed had once supervised Clara at a federal financial crimes unit. She now operated a private forensic firm and advised corporate boards.

Naomi arrived within an hour.

She listened without interrupting as Clara showed her the messages, invoices, photographs, and audio files.

When Clara finished, Naomi leaned back.

“This is much bigger than infidelity.”

“I know.”

“If these payments came from restricted government project funds, Richard could face federal charges.”

“I know.”

“If he discovers you copied this, he may destroy everything.”

Clara looked toward the rain-covered window.

“Then we move before he knows.”

For the next four weeks, Clara built the case piece by piece.

She examined public records, shareholder reports, archived vendor contracts, and documents Richard carelessly brought home. Naomi’s team traced Meridian to a shell company controlled by Sabrina’s brother.

Money had moved from Hale Aeronautics through Meridian and into accounts connected to Richard.

The total exceeded eighteen million dollars.

Clara also discovered that Richard had forged her digital signature on a preliminary shareholder authorization. The final transfer still required her notarized signature, explaining why he had recently become interested in simplifying the family trust.

Each discovery hurt more than the last.

Yet Clara never allowed Richard to see her fear.

At dinner, she asked about his day.

At night, she pretended to sleep while he messaged Sabrina beside her.

During prenatal appointments, Clara smiled for photographs Richard later posted online.

The perfect husband.

The perfect wife.

The perfect lie.

Only one question remained.

Who had sent the warning?

The answer arrived in the form of a handwritten note slipped beneath Clara’s windshield wiper.

Ask Daniel Mercer what happened to Elena Hale.

Elena was Richard’s mother.

She had died three years earlier.
