Chapter 9 - the fire at lake haven)

Lake Haven Maternity Residence had stood on eleven acres beside a private lake two hours west of the Mercer estate.
Officially, it had helped unmarried mothers.
Unofficially, according to old newspaper articles Claire found, it operated with almost no oversight.
William Mercer funded it.
Margaret's mother served on its board.
St. Matthew's Hospital referred patients there.
The residence burned on June 3, thirty four years earlier.
No deaths were reported.
Records were supposedly destroyed.
The property was later sold.
Claire stared at the screen.
"Convenient."
Daniel sat beside her in their kitchen.
Lily was upstairs asleep.
For the first time since the porch incident, she had agreed to sleep in her own room.
A motion sensor had been added near her window.
Daniel had checked it five times.
Claire closed the laptop.
"You should sleep."
"I have a sister."
"Possibly."
"My mother knew."
"Margaret knew a girl existed."
Daniel looked at her.
"That's what I meant."
Claire understood.
He still called Margaret his mother without thinking.
Biology did not erase thirty five years of language.
Daniel rubbed his eyes.
"How do I explain any of this to Lily?"
"You don't."
"What?"
"Not yet."
Claire leaned back.
"She needs to know Grandma did something wrong. She needs to know none of it was her fault. She does not need a thirty five year old maternity conspiracy."
Daniel nodded.
"You always know what to say."
"No."
Claire looked toward the ceiling.
"I just know what not to put on a six year old."
Daniel heard the criticism inside the sentence.
He deserved it.
"I'm making an appointment with Dr. Emerson."
Claire looked at him.
Their marriage counselor.
They had stopped attending four months earlier because Margaret repeatedly mocked the idea.
"Why?"
"Because I don't want fear to turn me into my mother."
Claire studied him.
That answer mattered.
Not enough to fix everything.
Enough to create a path.
The next morning, Detective Hart called.
Lake Haven had not been completely destroyed.
A detached records cottage survived the fire.
The current property owner used it as storage.
By noon, Claire, Daniel, Hart and Evelyn were driving west.
Michael followed in his own car.
Daniel had not invited him.
He also had not told him to leave.
It was progress of a strange kind.
The property had become a private equestrian retreat.
The owner met them near the lake.
"Most of the original residence is gone."
She pointed toward a stone foundation disappearing beneath grass.
"The cottage is over there."
The building smelled of mold and cedar.
Boxes filled metal shelves.
Most belonged to later owners.
In the back corner stood six gray filing cabinets stamped with the faded letters LHP.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Hart pulled on gloves.
The files were arranged by year.
October.
They searched.
Birth intake numbers.
Names had been removed from many pages.
But one folder carried the transfer number from the ledger.
The female infant.
Claire opened it.
Inside was a single sheet.
Female newborn.
Healthy.
Approximate weight.
Blood type.
Transfer authorized.
Receiving party coded.
Then a handwritten sentence.
Twin separation approved by WM.
Evelyn turned away.
Daniel clenched his jaw.
Hart looked at the receiving code.
C14.
"Does that mean anything?"
No one answered.
Michael, standing near the door, whispered.
"Yes."
Daniel turned sharply.
"You knew."
Michael looked at Evelyn.
"I suspected."
"What is C14?"
Michael closed the door behind him.
"There were private adoption families identified by codes."
"How do you know that?"
"Because William once offered me money to disappear."
"We know."
"No."
Michael looked at Daniel.
"You don't."
He pulled a folded piece of paper from his jacket.
"Before he threatened me, he offered me a child."
Daniel stared.
"What?"
"He said if I signed away every claim to Evelyn's baby, he could arrange another adoption for me later."
Claire felt nauseated.
"He offered you someone else's baby."
Michael nodded.
"I thought it was a bluff."
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
"I was nineteen and terrified."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Everyone was young and terrified. That's the explanation for everything."
Michael accepted the insult.
Hart said, "C14."
Michael looked at her.
"I saw that code years later in Peter's notes."
"Who was it?"
"A family."
"Name?"
Michael hesitated.
"I only remember the surname started with Caldwell."
Daniel frowned.
"Caldwell?"
Claire froze.
Daniel noticed.
"What?"
Claire was already reaching for her phone.
"Margaret's closest friend is Patricia Caldwell."
Daniel stared.
The birthday party.
The woman seated beside Margaret.
A silver haired philanthropist Claire had met dozens of times.
Patricia Caldwell.
"Does she have children?" Hart asked.
Daniel answered.
"One daughter."
Claire searched.
A photograph appeared.
Patricia Caldwell beside her daughter, Rebecca.
Thirty five years old.
Blonde.
Blue gray eyes.
Claire slowly turned the screen toward Daniel.
He looked at Rebecca.
Then at Evelyn.
The resemblance was not subtle.
Evelyn sat down.
"No."
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Claire's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered.
"Stop looking for Rebecca Caldwell."
Claire stood.
"Who is this?"
The caller continued.
"Margaret made one mistake with Lily."
Claire's skin went cold.
"What?"
May you like
"She let the child live."
The line went dead.
