Chapter 12 - the intruder in lily's room)

Daniel reached the stairs first.

Claire was two steps behind.

Police protection outside responded within seconds, but Daniel was already running down the upstairs hall.

"Lily!"

No answer.

Claire's heart stopped.

Daniel hit the bedroom door.

Locked.

He kicked once.

Twice.

The frame cracked.

On the third strike, the door opened.

Lily was crouched inside her closet.

Alone.

The window stood open.

Curtains moved in the night air.

Claire dropped beside her.

"Lily."

Her daughter screamed until she recognized her.

Then she threw herself forward.

"A man was here."

Daniel turned toward the window.

An officer stopped him from climbing out.

"What did he look like?"

Lily shook.

"He had a hat."

"Did he touch you?"

"No."

"What did he do?"

"He said hide."

Claire froze.

"He told you to hide?"

Lily nodded.

"He said bad people were coming."

Daniel and Claire looked at each other.

The intruder had not attacked Lily.

He had entered her room.

Told her to hide.

Then disappeared.

An officer searched the closet.

Inside Lily's backpack was a small object that had not been there earlier.

A USB drive.

Detective Hart arrived within twenty minutes.

The drive was taken to a forensic computer.

It contained one video.

Recorded seventeen years earlier.

Robert Mercer sat in what appeared to be an office.

He looked directly into the camera.

Daniel covered his mouth.

Claire had seen photographs.

Home movies.

But never something like this.

Robert's voice filled the room.

"If you're watching this, I failed."

Daniel moved closer.

Robert continued.

"My father spent decades turning desperate women and unwanted pregnancies into a private market for wealthy families."

Evelyn began crying.

"He called it placement."

Robert looked exhausted.

"It was trafficking."

No one spoke.

Robert continued.

"I learned the truth too late."

Then he said something that changed Daniel's face.

"Daniel, if this reaches you, I need you to know I loved you before I knew whether you were biologically mine, and I loved you after."

Daniel sat down.

Claire squeezed his shoulder.

Robert continued.

"Evelyn was pregnant when Margaret and I married."

Margaret looked away.

"I had been with Evelyn shortly before she began seeing Michael Reyes."

Michael closed his eyes.

The room held all of them now.

Claire.

Daniel.

Margaret.

Evelyn.

Rebecca.

Michael.

Hart.

A family built from overlapping truths.

Robert said, "I never knew which of us was Daniel's biological father. By the time I learned William had taken both twins, the girl had already disappeared into one of his private placements."

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Robert continued.

"Margaret wanted Daniel. She believed raising him would make everything right."

Margaret's face collapsed.

"For years, I let myself believe the same."

Daniel watched his father speak from seventeen years in the past.

Then Robert leaned closer to the camera.

"But there is something worse."

Claire felt the shift.

"William was not working alone."

The video distorted briefly.

Robert continued.

"Jonathan discovered the operation before I did. I believed he was trying to expose it. I was wrong."

Margaret whispered.

"Turn it off."

Daniel looked at her.

"No."

Robert's voice continued.

"Jonathan believed the transfers could become a business independent of the Mercer family. He kept copies of the records. He threatened Father because he wanted control."

Detective Hart exchanged a look with another officer.

"He vanished after Father refused."

Robert looked directly into the camera.

"But Jonathan returned seventeen years ago."

Daniel whispered.

"The year you died."

On screen, Robert nodded almost as if he had heard him.

"If anything happens to me, investigate Jonathan."

The video cut.

Everyone remained silent.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

"Did you know this existed?"

"No."

"Did you know Jonathan came back before Dad died?"

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

"Because Robert told me Jonathan would destroy the family."

Claire stared.

"Robert was investigating him."

Margaret looked at her.

"I know."

"Then you protected the wrong person."

"I protected Daniel."

Daniel stood.

"Stop saying that."

Margaret flinched.

"Every terrible thing you did was supposedly for me."

"I loved you."

"No."

His voice broke.

"You controlled me."

Margaret began crying.

"I raised you."

"And I loved you."

That silenced her.

Daniel continued.

"I still love parts of you. I hate that I do."

Margaret stared at him.

"But loving you does not mean Lily has to be sacrificed to keep you comfortable."

Margaret lowered her head.

Daniel looked toward the USB drive.

"Who brought this?"

Hart answered.

"We'll find out."

At 1:10 a.m., police recovered exterior footage from a neighbor.

The intruder had removed his cap while climbing a rear fence.

Facial recognition was unnecessary.

Margaret identified him immediately.

Jonathan Mercer.

Alive.

Sixty nine years old.

And according to a newly recovered passport record, he had returned to the United States six weeks earlier.

Exactly three days before Margaret began telling Daniel that Lily might not be his daughter.

Claire looked at Margaret.

"You knew he was back."

Margaret did not answer.

Daniel stared at her.

"Did Jonathan tell you to attack Lily's paternity?"

Margaret remained silent.

Claire understood.

May you like

The paternity scheme had been Margaret's weapon.

But someone else may have handed it to her.
