Chapter 5 - the man who had watched from a distance)

Daniel did not open the gate.
Michael Reyes did not ask him to.
They spoke through the intercom for eleven minutes while Claire listened beside Daniel.
Michael's voice was steady.
"I understand you don't want me inside."
Daniel said nothing.
"I wouldn't either."
"Why are you here?"
"Because Peter Lang is alive."
Claire and Daniel exchanged a look.
"Where?" Claire asked.
Michael looked toward the street before answering.
"I don't know."
"Then how do you know he's alive?"
"Because he called me yesterday."
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
"What did he say?"
"One sentence."
Michael hesitated.
"He said, 'Tell the boy his mother wasn't the only woman pregnant that night.'"
Daniel stared at the monitor.
Claire felt the meaning before she could define it.
"What does that mean?" Daniel asked.
"I was hoping you knew."
"I learned six hours ago that the woman who raised me may not be my biological mother."
Michael lowered his head.
"I know."
Daniel's voice became harder.
"You've known for thirty five years."
"Yes."
"And you waited until two in the morning to introduce yourself."
Michael accepted the accusation.
"I have no defense that will make you feel better."
"Try."
Claire touched Daniel's arm.
Not to silence him.
To remind him Lily was sleeping upstairs.
Daniel lowered his voice.
Michael said, "I tried to take you from them when you were an infant. William Mercer had me arrested for theft. The charge disappeared after I agreed to leave the state."
"Why didn't you come back?"
"I did."
"When?"
"Your fifth birthday. Your eighth. Your eleventh."
Daniel frowned.
"I never saw you."
"You weren't supposed to."
Michael smiled sadly.
"I watched you play baseball from behind the outfield fence."
Daniel went completely still.
Michael continued.
"When you were fourteen, I approached Evelyn. She begged me not to tell you. She said Margaret loved you. She said Robert was a good father."
"He was."
"I know."
Daniel looked startled.
Michael nodded.
"Robert met me once."
"When?"
"When you were sixteen."
Claire watched Daniel process that.
"My dad knew?"
"He knew I claimed to be your biological father. I showed him enough evidence that he believed me."
"What did he do?"
"He asked me to wait until you were eighteen."
"Did you?"
"Robert died before your eighteenth birthday."
Daniel looked away.
Robert Mercer had died of a heart attack at forty seven.
Daniel rarely spoke about the months afterward.
Claire knew losing him had changed Daniel from an impulsive teenager into the controlled man she eventually married.
Michael continued.
"After Robert died, Margaret threatened Evelyn again. Then William Mercer died. By that time, the trust was under Margaret's control."
"So you stayed away because of money?"
"No. I stayed away because every time I moved closer, something happened to someone around me."
Claire felt a chill.
"What happened?"
"My accountant disappeared."
Daniel looked back at the screen.
"When?"
"Eleven years ago."
Claire already knew the answer.
"What was his name?"
Michael stared into the camera.
"Peter Lang."
Silence.
Daniel shook his head.
"Peter was my grandfather's security director."
"Later he worked for me."
"Doing what?"
"Tracing payments made around your birth."
Michael held up a folder.
"He found proof William paid a hospital administrator, a county clerk and two nurses."
Claire's pulse increased.
"To alter Daniel's records?"
"Yes."
"Then Peter disappeared."
"Yes."
"Why would Margaret say he died?"
"I think she thought he did."
Daniel looked sharply at Claire.
Michael continued.
"Yesterday he called from a blocked number. He sounded frightened. He said someone had found him."
"Who?"
"He didn't say."
"What does the photograph of Lily mean?"
Michael frowned.
"What photograph?"
Claire described it.
Michael became visibly alarmed.
"That isn't Peter."
"How do you know?"
"Peter would never threaten a child."
"You haven't seen him in eleven years."
"I know him."
Daniel almost smiled bitterly.
"You people keep saying that about people who apparently have entire secret lives."
Michael did not argue.
Claire asked, "Who would benefit from threatening Lily?"
Michael looked at Daniel.
"Someone who needs you to make a decision before midnight tonight."
Daniel glanced at the clock.
2:29 a.m.
"My birthday ended two and a half hours ago."
Michael shook his head.
"Not according to the trust."
"What?"
"The trust's transfer window closes at noon."
Daniel frowned.
"I thought control became irrevocable at thirty five."
"It does. But there is a twelve hour administrative certification period."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"What happens at noon?"
"Daniel's beneficiary rights become fully independent from Margaret's trustee authority."
"And she loses control?"
"Not automatically."
Michael lifted the folder again.
"But if he signs a challenge based on concealed lineage before noon, an independent fiduciary takes over pending investigation."
Daniel stared.
"You came here at two in the morning to get me to sign something?"
Michael's expression hardened.
"No."
He opened the folder and held a document toward the camera.
"I came to tell you not to sign anything."
Claire leaned closer.
The document carried Daniel's name.
A signature line.
And a date.
Today.
Michael said, "Margaret's attorneys prepared a beneficiary waiver."
Daniel looked confused.
"I've never seen that."
"You will."
"What does it do?"
"It gives temporary administrative authority over disputed descendants back to the trustee."
Claire understood.
"Lily."
Michael nodded.
"If Daniel signs while Lily's status is characterized as contested, Margaret could freeze Lily's future trust rights."
"But the DNA result proved she's Daniel's."
"Margaret didn't know what the result would say when her lawyers prepared this."
Daniel's face changed.
"She started the rumor to create a dispute."
"Yes."
Claire whispered.
"And she planned the birthday lunch before the certification deadline."
Michael nodded again.
"She needed you emotional. Confused. Doubting Claire."
Daniel stared at the dark screen around Michael's image.
Everything that had happened in the past two months rearranged itself.
The photograph.
The whispers.
The sudden insistence on testing.
Margaret's repeated warnings that Daniel should protect the Mercer legacy before discovering the truth.
It had never been about whether Lily belonged.
It had been about forcing Daniel to formally question whether she belonged.
A legal opening.
Claire looked at Michael.
"Who sent the photograph?"
"I don't know."
"Who broke into the hidden room?"
"I don't know."
"What happened to Peter?"
"I don't know."
Claire almost snapped at him.
Then Michael held up one final item.
Not a document.
A cassette tape.
Daniel stared.
Michael said, "This recording was made the night you were born."
"By who?"
"Peter."
"What is on it?"
"I've never listened to the whole thing."
"Why not?"
"Because Peter told me if he disappeared, the full recording should only be heard by you."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Then give it to me."
Michael shook his head.
"I can't."
Daniel's anger returned.
"You drive to my house at two in the morning and wave evidence at me..."
"Because this isn't the original."
Michael turned the cassette.
One side had been melted.
"The original is hidden somewhere in the Mercer house."
Daniel stared at it.
Michael added.
"And according to Peter, Margaret doesn't know where."
At 2:34 a.m., Daniel's phone buzzed.
A message from his mother.
Please come to the estate at 9:00. Alone. I can explain everything.
Attached was a photograph of a legal document.
Beneficiary Waiver.
May you like
Daniel looked at Claire.
Michael had been right.
