Chapter 14 - the choice daniel finally made)

Daniel did not bring Claire to Jonathan.

That was the first decision.

He did not bring the original ledger either.

That was the second.

The third decision surprised everyone.

He turned every copy of the ledger over to federal investigators.

Not only the pages involving his family.

All thirty two transfers.

Every code.

Every payment.

Every surviving name.

"If this destroys the Mercer foundation," Margaret said, "there will be innocent employees affected."

Daniel looked at her.

"Then we protect the employees."

"The family name..."

"Can survive the truth or disappear."

Margaret stared.

Daniel continued.

"I'm done protecting a name more than people."

Claire heard the difference between the man standing before her and the husband who had questioned her two months earlier because his mother whispered often enough.

Trust was not repaired by speeches.

But decisions mattered.

Federal agents joined the search for Jonathan and Peter.

The maternity ledger suggested crimes spanning multiple states.

Several former hospital employees were located.

One nurse agreed to talk.

By evening, authorities identified a warehouse Jonathan had rented outside the city.

They surrounded it.

Jonathan was gone.

Peter was inside.

Alive.

On the floor beside him was a portable cassette player.

The original tape Michael had searched for.

Daniel arrived after Peter was transported to the hospital.

Hart handed him an evidence copy of the audio.

"You don't have to hear this tonight."

Daniel looked at Claire.

"Yes, I do."

They listened in their living room.

The recording began with static.

Then William Mercer's voice.

Claire had never heard him.

He sounded calm.

Businesslike.

A woman cried in the background.

Evelyn.

Nineteen years old.

"I want my babies."

William answered.

"You want Michael."

"I want my children."

"You are in no position to decide."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Another male voice spoke.

Robert.

"Leave her alone."

Margaret's voice followed.

"Robert, please."

Then William.

"The boy stays with Margaret and Robert."

Evelyn screamed.

"No."

"The girl has already been placed."

The recording erupted into movement.

Someone arguing.

A door.

Then Michael's voice in the distance.

"Evelyn!"

Daniel covered his face.

Claire stopped the recording.

"No."

He lowered his hands.

"Keep going."

The tape resumed.

Then came the sentence everyone had been waiting for.

Robert said.

"The boy may be mine."

Silence on tape.

Margaret whispered.

"What?"

Robert repeated.

"Evelyn and I were together before the wedding."

William's voice became dangerous.

"You will never say that again."

Robert answered.

"I need to know."

William said.

"You need to understand that biology is irrelevant. I decide who belongs to this family."

Claire looked toward Lily's bedroom.

The same philosophy.

Thirty five years later, Margaret had repeated it on the porch.

Families only keep the right children.

The recording continued.

Robert demanded the girl be brought back.

William refused.

Then Jonathan's voice appeared.

Younger.

Angry.

"I made copies."

William said something too quiet to hear.

Jonathan responded.

"If you keep cutting me out, I take everything public."

Robert said.

"This isn't about money."

Jonathan laughed.

"Everything in this family is about money."

The tape ended moments later.

It did not identify Daniel's biological father.

But it proved Robert knew he might be.

It proved Evelyn never voluntarily surrendered her children.

It proved William orchestrated the separation.

And it proved Jonathan had been there.

The following morning, arrest warrants were issued for Jonathan on kidnapping, extortion, evidence tampering and several charges connected to Peter's abduction.

Margaret faced separate investigation regarding child endangerment, falsified historical records and obstruction.

Claire filed for a permanent protective order keeping Margaret away from Lily.

Daniel supported it.

Margaret did not contest the first hearing.

That surprised Claire most.

Outside court, Margaret approached under supervision.

Daniel immediately stepped between her and Lily.

Margaret stopped.

Lily hid behind Claire.

Margaret looked at her granddaughter.

Then at the ground.

"I'm sorry."

Lily said nothing.

Margaret's eyes filled.

"I was wrong."

Claire waited for excuses.

None came.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"Good."

She winced.

He continued.

"If you want any chance of knowing us in the future, you tell investigators everything."

Margaret nodded.

"No lawyers hiding records. No family pressure. No buying silence."

"I understand."

"And you stay away from Lily until professionals decide contact is safe."

Margaret looked toward the child.

Her voice trembled.

"I understand."

Daniel walked away.

Claire followed.

Lily held both their hands.

It should have felt like an ending.

Margaret's control was broken.

Lily was safe.

Rebecca had been found.

Evelyn had both children in her life.

The trust was under independent administration.

Peter was alive.

Jonathan was being hunted.

Claire and Daniel had even returned to counseling.

The central lie had collapsed.

But three nights later, Claire woke at 1:06 a.m.

Daniel was not beside her.

She found him downstairs.

The laptop glowed in the dark.

On screen was an email.

No sender name.

One attachment.

A DNA report.

Claire sat beside him.

"Is that..."

Daniel nodded.

"Jonathan's private test."

"How did you get it?"

"It arrived ten minutes ago."

Claire looked at the result.

Samples labeled Daniel Mercer.

Robert Mercer.

Michael Reyes.

She swallowed.

"Did you open the result page?"

Daniel looked at her.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted you here."

Claire touched his hand.

Together they clicked.

The first page confirmed Robert's sample authenticity with moderate confidence.

The second confirmed Michael's reference profile.

The third page contained the paternity comparison.

Daniel's hand froze on the mouse.

Before he could scroll, the front door alarm chimed.

Someone was outside.

At 1:09 in the morning.

Claire opened the security feed.

A woman stood at the gate.

Approximately thirty five.

Dark coat.

Blonde hair.

She held a small child in her arms.

Daniel frowned.

"Do you know her?"

Claire shook her head.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

Then lifted a piece of paper.

A birth certificate.

The intercom activated.

Her voice shook.

"Daniel Mercer?"

Daniel answered cautiously.

"Yes."

The woman looked behind her as though afraid she had been followed.

"My name is Anna."

"What do you want?"

She looked at the sleeping boy in her arms.

Then back at the camera.

"I think Jonathan Mercer has been lying to all of you."

Daniel and Claire looked at each other.

May you like

Anna continued.

"And I think my son is the reason."
