Chapter 3 - the woman in room 17)

The motel was forty minutes north of the Mercer estate.

Daniel wanted to go with Claire.

The message had been explicit.

Claire alone.

"I don't like it," he said.

They stood beside Claire's car while Lily slept inside the house under Rosa's supervision.

Claire glanced toward the upstairs window.

"I don't like any of this."

"Then don't go."

"If Evelyn ran from the house because those results came out, she knows something."

"She could be lying."

"Your mother could be lying."

Daniel looked away.

Claire regretted the sharpness immediately, but not enough to apologize.

For weeks she had carried the burden of proving herself innocent.

Daniel was only beginning to understand what it felt like when your family history became something other people debated.

She touched his arm.

"I'll keep my phone on."

"Share your location."

"I will."

"And if anything feels wrong..."

"I leave."

Daniel nodded.

Then, before Claire could step into the car, he said, "I'm sorry."

She looked at him.

"For what?"

"For making you prove Lily."

The simplicity of the sentence hurt.

Claire swallowed.

"We'll talk about that later."

"I should have trusted you."

"Yes."

He nodded slowly.

She drove away.

Room 17 was at the far end of a two story motel overlooking a truck stop.

Claire knocked.

The door opened almost immediately.

Evelyn Mercer looked twenty years older than she had at lunch.

Her lipstick was gone.

Her gray blonde hair had been pulled into an uneven ponytail.

She wore jeans and a faded navy sweater.

"Come in."

Claire remained outside.

"Why me?"

"Because Daniel needs to decide whether he wants me to be his mother before he knows what I did."

Claire stared at her.

Evelyn gave a tired smile.

"Now you understand why I left."

Claire entered.

The room smelled of stale coffee.

Three folders were arranged on the bed.

Evelyn locked the door.

"Is Lily all right?"

"Physically."

"I didn't know Margaret would do that."

"You heard what Margaret called her."

Evelyn looked ashamed.

"I did."

"And you walked away."

"I spent thirty five years walking away."

Claire said nothing.

Evelyn sat.

"When I was nineteen, I became pregnant."

Claire felt the room narrow around her.

"The father?"

"A man named Michael Reyes."

"Does Daniel know him?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Michael was not the kind of man my parents wanted connected to their family."

"What kind was he?"

"Poor."

Evelyn almost smiled.

"That was his crime."

She opened the first folder.

Inside were photographs of a young Evelyn with a dark haired man.

They looked happy.

Evelyn continued.

"My father threatened to disinherit me. My mother threatened to send me away. Margaret was twenty five. She was married to Robert Mercer by then."

Daniel's father.

Claire sat across from her.

"What happened?"

"My parents told everyone I was studying abroad."

"But you were in the hidden room."

Evelyn nodded.

"They kept me there when I refused to terminate the pregnancy."

Claire felt cold.

"For how long?"

"Five months."

The dates on the wall.

The sealed window.

The iron bed.

Claire pictured a nineteen year old girl trapped behind a bookshelf in her own home.

"Why didn't you leave?"

"They took my identification. There were security guards. And I was terrified."

"What happened when Daniel was born?"

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"I held him for seven minutes."

Claire looked at her.

"Seven?"

"A nurse brought him to me. My mother took him away."

Evelyn pressed her hands together.

"Margaret and Robert had been trying to have a child. Margaret had suffered two miscarriages. The family decided my pregnancy could solve two problems."

Claire already knew the rest.

"They gave Daniel to Margaret."

Evelyn nodded.

"His birth certificate was altered. Margaret and Robert became his legal parents. I was told the baby had gone to another family and I would never find him."

"But you knew?"

"Not at first."

"When did you learn?"

"When he was three."

Claire stared at her.

"You knew Daniel was your son for thirty two years?"

Evelyn cried quietly.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell him?"

"Because by the time I learned, Margaret had raised him. He called her Mom. Robert adored him. And my parents threatened to send Michael to prison."

"For what?"

"They had arranged false financial charges against him."

Claire leaned back.

"This family buried a child theft with blackmail."

Evelyn winced at the phrase.

"It felt different when I was twenty two."

"It wasn't."

"No."

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

"No, it wasn't."

Claire looked at the three folders.

"What changed now?"

"Margaret started the paternity rumor."

Claire frowned.

"Why would that make you talk?"

"Because I saw what she was doing to Lily."

"You still didn't stop it."

"I tried privately."

"Private objections don't help a six year old chained outside."

Evelyn looked down.

"You sound like Michael."

Claire became still.

"He's alive?"

Evelyn looked toward the second folder.

"Yes."

"Does Daniel know?"

"No."

"Does Michael know?"

A long silence.

Then Evelyn nodded.

"He has always known."

Claire felt anger rising again.

"So his biological father knew Daniel existed and did nothing?"

"He did something."

Evelyn opened the second folder.

Court filings.

Old letters.

A private investigator's report.

Copies of checks.

"He spent twenty years trying to get close enough to prove Daniel was his son."

"What stopped him?"

"Money. Lawyers. Sealed records. My father's influence."

Claire picked up a letter.

The handwriting was neat.

Evelyn, I saw him outside the school today. He has your eyes.

Claire put it down.

"Where is Michael now?"

Evelyn looked frightened.

"I don't know."

"Then why did you tell me he is alive?"

"Because three nights ago, he called me for the first time in eleven years."

Claire stared.

"What did he say?"

Evelyn reached for the third folder.

"He said Margaret was about to lose everything."

"Why?"

Evelyn slid a document across the bed.

It was a copy of a trust agreement.

The Mercer Heritage Trust.

Claire scanned the page.

A clause had been highlighted.

Control of the trust depended on the direct biological lineage of founder William Mercer.

Margaret was not the biological parent of Daniel.

Claire looked up.

"Daniel could lose his inheritance?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"The opposite."

"What?"

"Margaret could lose control of it."

Claire looked back at the document.

Evelyn pointed to another provision.

If a trustee intentionally concealed or falsified a beneficiary's lineage for financial benefit, control transferred automatically to an independent fiduciary pending investigation.

Margaret had been trustee for twenty seven years.

"How much money?"

Evelyn whispered the number.

Claire thought she had misheard.

"Say that again."

"Approximately four hundred and eighty million dollars."

Claire stopped breathing.

Suddenly the paternity rumor looked different.

Not cruelty for cruelty's sake.

Strategy.

"If Margaret could convince Daniel that Lily wasn't his..."

Evelyn nodded.

"She could pressure him to change parts of his estate plan. Maybe disinherit Lily from his branch of the trust."

"But why now?"

"Because Daniel turns thirty five today."

Claire remembered the birthday lunch.

"What happens at thirty five?"

Evelyn's face went pale.

"His trust rights become irrevocable."

Claire's phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered.

His voice was breathless.

"Claire, where are you?"

"With Evelyn."

"Leave."

"Daniel..."

"Leave right now."

A loud noise sounded behind him.

"What happened?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Someone broke into the hidden room."

Claire stood.

"What did they take?"

"I don't know. But they left something."

"What?"

Daniel was silent for two seconds.

Then he said, "A photograph of Lily."

Claire's blood ran cold.

May you like

"Daniel..."

"There was a red circle around her face."
