Mara appointed Dr. Lena Brooks, a former engineer and operations director, as chief executive.

Lena had warned Adrian about safety problems two years earlier. He had ignored her and later removed her from product development after she refused to approve incomplete tests.

Under Lena’s leadership, the company began recovering faster than expected.

Mara could have taken permanent control and renamed the business.

Instead, she created an employee ownership program.

A portion of future profits would purchase shares for long-term workers. Board seats were reserved for engineering, manufacturing, and employee representatives.

The Vale family remained minority shareholders, but they could no longer control the company.

Vivienne sold the mansion to pay legal expenses connected to the investigation.

Camille moved to another city and attempted to rebuild her career without the family name opening doors.

Adrian avoided criminal charges because investigators found evidence of reckless management rather than deliberate theft. However, the board banned him from holding an executive position within the company.

One evening, he waited outside Mara’s office.

He looked thinner and less polished than before.

“I’m not here to ask for the company back,” he said.

“Then why are you here?”

“To apologize properly.”

Mara said nothing.

“I loved how you made me feel,” Adrian continued. “But I didn’t respect who you were. I wanted you beside me as long as you stayed beneath me.”

It was the first honest thing he had said in months.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Mara studied him.

“I believe you.”

Hope appeared in his eyes.
