Chapter 4 - The Agreement

Two weeks before the wedding, Vivienne invited Mara to lunch.
Mara arrived expecting a final discussion about flowers or seating arrangements.
Instead, she found Vivienne, Camille, Adrian, and the Vale family attorney waiting in a private dining room.
A cream envelope rested beside Mara’s plate.
“A prenuptial agreement,” Vivienne announced.
Mara opened it calmly.
The document protected all Vale family assets, including the company shares they believed were still worth millions. It also required Mara to waive financial claims if the marriage ended.
Mara did not object to those provisions.
She objected to the clause that prevented her from discussing misconduct by any member of the Vale family.
“This is a lifetime confidentiality agreement,” Mara said.
“It protects our reputation,” Camille replied.
“From what?”
Camille glanced at Adrian.
He avoided Mara’s eyes.
Mara turned another page and found a clause demanding that all property purchased during the marriage be registered under Adrian’s name unless he approved otherwise.
She closed the document.
“I won’t sign this.”
Vivienne gave a humorless laugh.
“Then perhaps you are not ready to join this family.”
Adrian reached for Mara’s hand, but the gesture felt rehearsed.
“It’s standard.”
“No, it isn’t.”
“My family has more to lose than you do.”
The words created a silence that only Mara seemed to understand.
Adrian believed she was financially insignificant.
He believed marriage to him was the greatest security she would ever receive.
Mara withdrew her hand.
“What do I gain from this agreement?”
“You gain me,” Adrian said.
Vivienne smiled approvingly.
Something inside Mara finally became still.
She did not argue. She did not reveal her fortune or explain that the investment keeping the Vale family wealthy existed because of her.
She placed the unsigned agreement back inside its envelope.
“I’ll have my attorney review it.”
Adrian relaxed.
He thought he had won more time.
Mara returned to her office and called her legal team.
“Prepare the restructuring documents,” she said. “And cancel every wedding contract under my name.”
Her attorney hesitated.
“Are you certain?”
Mara looked at the engagement ring on her hand.
May you like
“Not yet.”
She wanted to give Adrian one final opportunity to choose her without knowing what she controlled.
